About this file

This document is a Statement of Need for a Non-Cryogenic Spinner Magnetometer issued by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The USGS requires a specialized magnetometer for studying gas hydrate systems in marine and permafrost environments, specifically for measuring rock magnetic properties and natural remanent magnetization of sediment samples. The required instrument must have precise technical specifications, including a sensitivity of 2.4 x 10-6 A/m, a measuring range up to 12,500 A/m, low and high-speed operation (87.7 and 16.7 rps), ability to measure samples in up to 6 orientations, and ±3% accuracy.

Key additional requirements include the ability to measure 2 x 2 x 2 cm sample cubes, a non-cryogenic compact benchtop design, 110-120V power compatibility, and vendor-provided setup and training. The instrument will be used for projects characterizing gas hydrate systems in the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska North Slope, with a focus on analyzing magnetic mineral assemblages to trace gas hydrate formation and methane oxidation processes in sedimentary settings.

Statement of Need: Spinner Magnetometer (Non-Cryogenic)

Introduction:

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) needs to purchase a non-cryogenic spinner magnetometer.

Measurements of rock magnetic properties and natural remanent magnetization are fundamental to our studies on gas hydrate systems in marine and permafrost environments. Alteration of primary detrital magnetic minerals and precipitation of secondary diagenetic magnetic minerals are key tracers of gas hydrate formation and anaerobic oxidation of methane in sedimentary settings. The USGS is working on funded projects characterizing gas hydrate systems in the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska North Slope. As part of these efforts, we will measure the natural remanent magnetization, saturation isothermal remanent magnetization, and coercivity of sediment samples to characterize the magnetic mineral assemblage. This will require a spinner magnetometer to measure both low values of natural magnetic remanence and high acquired magnetizations.

Salient Characteristics:

• Shall meet the required analysis of remanent magnetization (natural and acquired remanence) on sediment samples at the following minimum standards:

o Sensitivity of 2.4 x 10-6 A/m o Measuring range up to 12,500 A/m o Low- and high-speed operation (i.e. 87.7 and 16.7 rps) o Measurement in up to 6 sample orientations.

o ±3% accuracy

• Shall be able to measure 2 x 2 x 2 cm sample cubes

• Shall be a Non-cryogenic system

• Shall have Compact benchtop operation

• Shall have Setup and training on instrument

• Shall have Must 110-120V power
