12. Design:

12.1. A fixed ladder with vertical rail and fall protection system, bolted to a substructure (assembled structural steel) and attached under an existing 6x12 foot steel platform. This platform is modified by cutting an opening to install a hatch access and entering platform from below.

12.2. The design is to conform to OSHA 1910.23, 1926 subpart L, 1915.73, 1926.453 and 1926.502 standards.

12.3. The substructure includes a small step-on platform with .25-inch-thick grid decking and .25-inch-thick deck supports. Material types and structural steel construction methods described in certified print. The size of platform should conform to OSHA safety standards in this design.

12.4. Utilizing a manned boom lift allows ascent from a starting point of ~26.25ft (32.25ft. – 6)

12.5. The ladder is 6 feet to the underside of MAU platforms with an extension remaining 42 inches above the deck. (6ft + 42in= 9.5ft)

12.6. This is a conceptual design framework. A qualified professional engineer must perform the final structural design, calculations, and approval to ensure the entire assembly is safe and compliant with all relevant federal, state, and local standards.

12.7. Engage an engineering professional to create detailed drawings for fabrication.

(see below design guide)

A. Starting Transitional Platform at ~26.25ft Elevation accessed by Boom Lift

• ~32.25ft Elevation is the existing working platform.

• ~26.26ft transitional platform serves as the starting point for the 6-foot ascent plus

42 inches above working platform. This design and construction are critical for an elevated working surface.

• Platform Dimensions & Guarding:

• Size: To comply with OSHA standards for landing platforms (1910.23(b)(4)), the transitional platform must be at least 24 inches wide and 30 inches long.

• Guardrail System: The platform must be protected by a full guardrail system on all open sides. Per OSHA 1910.29(b), this includes:

• A top rail at 42 inches above the platform's walking surface.

• A mid-rail installed halfway between the top rail and the walking surface.

• A toe board at least 3.5 inches high at the base to prevent tools from falling.

• Materials & Construction:

• Frame: ASTM A36 or A572 Gr. 50 structural steel (e.g., C-channel or angle).

• Decking: Similar to the main platform, a 0.25-inch-thick grid deck is suitable.

• Support: The platform must be independently and robustly supported. It should be attached directly to the primary structural steel of the building or main tower, not to the ladder system itself. Attachment can be via bolted connections or welding, as determined by the engineer.

B. Fixed Ladder Design

The fixed ladder now extends vertically 6 feet from the new transitional starting platform to the underside of the main 6x12 foot working platform. (This length does not include the 42-inch ladder extension above the main walking platform surface Per OSHA 1910.29(b).

• Materials:

• Side Rails: ASTM A36 structural steel angle (e.g., L3x3x1/4).

• Rungs: ASTM A36 solid steel round bar, minimum 3/4-inch diameter, with a slip-resistant surface.

• Construction:

• Total Length: 9.5 feet (9 feet 6 inches) 6 feet is the distance from underside of main working platform descending to transitional platform.

• Rung Spacing: Uniformly spaced at a maximum of 12 inches on center.

• Ladder Width: Minimum 16 inches clear width between side rails.

• Stand-off Distance: Minimum 7 inches of clear space from the rung centerline to any obstruction behind it.

C. Vertical Rail Fall Protection System

The fall protection system is essential for the entire climb; the length is the total including this final 6-foot section.

• System Type: A rigid rail system with a guided-fall protection sleeve remains the appropriate choice.

• Coverage: The rail must run continuously from the 26.25-foot transitional platform to a point that allows the worker to safely step onto the upper working platform at ~32.25ft above hangar deck.

• Anchorage (Critical Point): The primary anchorage for the fall arrest rail system must be on a main structural member of the upper 6x12 foot platform assembly. This anchorage must be engineered to withstand a force of 5,000 pounds, per OSHA 1926.502. The base of the rail will also be secured at the ~26.25ft platform, but the top anchor takes the fall-arrest load.

D. Structural Attachment Options

The attachments for both the ladder and the new platform must be to the primary building/tower structure.

Component Attachment Method
