Chimneys Picnic Area

1. General Information

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GRSM) is located in Tennessee and North Carolina and consists of nearly 521,000 acres. The park was established by Congress on June 15, 1934.

The Park’s mission is to protect, preserve, and interpret the natural, cultural, and historical resources for the benefit and inspiration of present and future generations. There are over 9 million visitors annually.

2. Facility Background

The Chimneys Picnic Area is located on Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road) approximately 3 miles southeast of the Sugarland’s Visitors Center in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The Picnic Area was originally used as a campground; however, at some point it was converted to a daily use picnic area. The Picnic Area consists of three (3) Comfort Stations serviced by both sewer and water, along with a looped road system through the area. The roads will be more completely described in the following section:

ROADWAYS

There is a one-way loop road extending from one end of the picnic area to the other end. There is a second shorter loop road that extends off of the outbound lane of the primary loop road. For the purposes of this project the roads are identified as follows:

Road A – The inbound segment of the primary loop road, which extends back to the water tank.

Road B – The outbound segment of the primary loop road.

Road C – The short loop road that extends off of Road B.

Road D – The short connector from Road A to Road B close to the entrance of the Picnic Area.

Road E – The short connector from Road A to Road B, approximately half-way to the end of the primary loop road.

Road F – The short connector from Road A to Road B at the end of the primary loop road.
