Version 11-30-2016-1 FAR Part 11—Describing Agency Needs

PURCHASE DESCRIPTION

1. Statement of Need and Purpose: The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Intramural Research Program (IRP) Neuronal Circuits and Behavior Section (NCBS) of the Cellular Neurobiology Research Branch (CNRB) is in need of procuring a Stereotaxic Alignment Instrument from David Kopf Instruments (brand name or equal) for their ongoing work investigating neuronal circuits that contribute to opioid use disorder and natural/motivated behaviors such as feeding and fight-or-flight.

2. Background Information and Objective: The NIDA IRP Mission is to conduct state-of-the-art basic, preclinical and clinical research on mechanisms that underlie substance use disorders, addiction and relapse. Ultimately we hope to translate these efforts into new methods for the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders highlighting the following: enhancing our research by taking advantage of our unique and outstanding strengths; increasing translational research and fortifying our clinical portfolio; strengthening our basic science with investment in technology; increasing Diversity and Inclusion at all levels; and prioritizing Trans-NIH initiatives and growing strong ties with other institutes.

The NCBS of the CNRB uses a combination of state-of-the-art optogenetic, electrophysiology, two-photon fluorescence endomicroscopy, immunohistochemistry, and behavioral assays to elucidate the neuronal basis of survival behaviors, such as feeding, and determine how these behaviors are disrupted in eating disorders and drug addiction.

The NCBS has a need to procure a David Kopf Instruments Stereotaxic Alignment Instrument to precisely and accurately target discrete brain regions that can be difficult to target by traditional surgical frames. Increasing accuracy for difficult injection targets is desirable, because it decreases the total number of animals needed for an experiment. In particular, work by the NCBS requires targeting of mouse deep brain regions for BSL2 anatomical tracing studies that are difficult to accurately hit with existing equipment. In addition, this Stereotaxic Alignment Instrument is compatible with both mouse and rat procedures, and this frame will be available for use by any NIDA IRP investigator working with BSL2 reagents in rodents.

3. Generic Name of Product: Stereotaxic Alignment Instrument
