Project Title Geophysical survey of 20 acres site in Sheridan County, Kansas

General Information

1.0 Background and Purpose

Provide an overview of the program or initiative, including goals and objectives, phases of the initiatives or requirement.

Geophysical survey is a non-ground disturbing survey method utilized primarily for identifying subsurface features such as buried utilities, water resources, foundations, and archaeological sites. The Kansas NRCS has a recurring intermittent need, on a context dependent basis, for the application of geophysical methodology when interrogating project areas of potential affect for significant archaeological deposits and features or human remains or burials as part of routine Section 106 investigations. Geophysical technology is ideal for near surface (less than or equal to 6 vertical feet) investigations, where a majority of the agency’s conservation practices are installed; however, most geophysical methods can identify subsurface anomalies deeper than 6 feet. Geophysical surveys are more comprehensive than traditional shovel testing and/or pedestrian surface archaeological survey methods, which consistently fail to produce a complete picture of the subsurface and are limited to normally the first maximum 2 vertical feet below the ground surface. Also, these more technologically nuanced methods are faster and cheaper than the more labor-intensive shovel testing methods.
