TIMELINE WALL

August 1954 Two B-47s from the 308th Bombardment Wing, a Second Air Force unit, ew a long-range mission to test whether B-47s stationed stateside could successfully complete missions against targets overseas and, without landing, return to stateside home bases. They completed a 10,000-mile non-stop ight from Hunter AFB, Georgia, to Europe and back. Each aircraft was refueled four times by KC-97s. This ight was in conjunction with Strategic Air Command's Operation Leap Frog where two bomb wings tested a new concept for intercontinental bombing operations. In this test, the 2d and 308th Bombardment Wings at Hunter ew a simulated bombing mission and then recovered at a base in North Africa. Prior to that, SAC sent bombers to forward operating bases where they subsequently took off on bombing missions.

OPERATION FOX PETER ONE – A 91st Air Refueling Squadron KB-29P Superfortress prepares to refuel a F-84G Thunderjet from the 31st Fighter Escort Wing (a Second Air Force unit).

Fifty-eight F-84s, led by Col David C. Schilling, left Turner AFB, Georgia, and landed at Misawa and Chitose Air Bases in Japan on 16 and 17 July 1952. Aircrews ew from Turner to Travis AFB in California, then on to Hickam Field in Hawaii, and then island-hopped to Japan, a 10,895-mile trip. This was the rst trans-Pacic crossing completed by an entire jet aircraft unit and the rst large-scale ghter deployment supported by in inight refueling. The trip from Travis to Japan took about 10 days. This was much faster than moving by aircraft carrier (about two weeks and then several more days to uncrate the aircraft). For this remarkable feat, the 31st Fighter Escort Wing received the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, the rst time it was ever given to a wing.

B-47s in Morocco, Reex Action

During the Cuban Missile Crisis, the 97th Bombardment Wing (today's 97th Air Mobility Wing at Altus AFB, Oklahoma) was assigned to Second Air Force's 4th Air Division, and the 97th supported the buildup with its B-52s and KC-135s. For its efforts, the wing received an Air Force Outstanding Unit Award.

As the picture shows, over 200 aircraft packed MacDill AFB, Florida, just part of the force the United States used in its stand-off with Russia.

1 July 1993 Second Air Force inactivated then reactivated at Keesler AFB, Mississippi, and assigned to Air Education and Training Command to manage its technical training programs.

2 June 1995 General Viccellio gave his approval to align pararescue and combat control training under Second Air Force and the 37th Training Wing at Lackland AFB, Texas.

1 January 1975 Second Air Force inactivates

1 January 1991 Second Air Force activated at Beale AFB, California, assigned to SAC.

1970’s A B-52 from the mid-1970s with a Second Air Force tail marking. The winged "2" was the ofcial Second Air Force emblem between October 1954 and April 1993. Then the Chief of Staff of the Air Force approved a Second Air Force request to return to its earlier World War II emblem approved in 1943, the striking falcon.

15-19 December 1972 Approximately 30 KC-135s and 50 tanker crews from Second Air Force united deployed to the Western Pacic to support LINEBACKER II operations in North Vietnam. From 18-28 December, Second Air Force provided nearly two-thirds of the SAC resources used in LINEBACKER II missions.

24 June 2008 Second Air Force gained command and control of the BMT process to include classications.

Activation of the Second Air Force Technical Training Operations Center.

29 August 2005 Hurricane Katrina crashed ashore near the Louisiana-Mississippi border as a Category 5 hurricane with sustained winds of 125 mph at 1000 and dropped 8-10 inches of rain. Keesler Air Force Base endured hurricane-force winds for approximately 12 hours and suffered a storm surge of approximately 18 feet.

7 June 2004 The 37 TRW began training the rst students in the Basic Combat Convoy Course (BC3) at Camp Bullis, Texas. The rst class graduated on 25 June 2004, training activities included battle drills, mission planning and supervision, urban navigation, and convoy operations.

May 1994 Technical Training and Second Air Force ofcials formed a tiger team to review the pararescue and combat control training process. The report made 34 recommendations, including offering incentives to keep students in training and transferring complete management of this career eld’s pipeline from Nineteenth to Second Air Force.
