About this file

This document is a specification sheet for Mouse Breeding Individually Ventilated Cage (IVC) Systems required by the DLA vivarium at the University to support animal research operations.

The IVC system must accommodate approximately 1,000 mice annually and be compatible with the current 142-inch cage inventory. Critical physical requirements include a maximum height of 78 inches to fit existing door frames, sealed tubular horizontal manifolds for air supply and exhaust, welded and riveted seams, and a high-temperature glass-filled polysulfone cage support runner system that is fully autoclavable at 250 degrees. The rack must feature an ergonomic single-finger motion docking system with auto-locking capability, tethered exhaust/supply manifold caps, and 304 stainless steel air tubes. Exhaust plenums must remain negative to the room regardless of blower air changes per hour and be compatible with Sentinel holders for PCR testing. The system must include rack-mounted blower options with power consumption between 7-25 watts and noise levels around 20 dB. Casters must be 5-inch and 3.5-inch diameter stainless steel with gray polypropylene wheels, sealed ball bearings, and four foot-operated brakes. The cage system itself must feature clear polysulfone plastic construction, internal stainless-steel diffusers, mechanically interlocked gaskets, automatic sealing exhaust ports with metal snap rings, T-99 HEPA Grade Filters (0.26 mm thickness), and hinged lid retainers. Supply air must enter at cage bottom with exhaust at lid level, and intra-cage air velocity must be sufficient to remove moisture and contaminants without discomfort to animals. The vendor must provide set-up and training for operators, trash removal services, and demonstrate best value and past performance. The system must be sanitizable and compatible with existing equipment.

Mouse Breeding Individually Ventilate Cage System Specifications

Background:

The DLA vivarium currently utilizes Individually-Ventilated Caging (IVCs) to house approximately 1000 mice annually in support of animal research at the University. IVCs are the industry standard and provide strict maintenance of the microenvironment, while ensuring compliance for user safety and ergonomics.

These additional IVCs will be used in the vivarium to house breeding mice used on approved and funded animal research projects. One of our deficiencies is the lack of space. This will help the researcher to conduct successful breeding in house instead of contracting out breeding program.

The individually-ventilated cages will greatly increase our mouse housing capacity without increasing our space requirements, therefore, increasing revenue through per-diem rates. By increasing our per-diem revenue, DLAR can continue to support animal research for the benefit of the Warfighter at USU.

These IVCs will also promote standardization across our mouse housing systems, minimizing environmental variables that could potentially affect research reproducibility.

Specifications:

The height MUST be under 78 inches to fit under the door frame.

Must come with cages and change out and compatible with current inventory system .

The ventilated rack MUST use sealed tubular horizontal manifolds for both air supply and exhaust air.

All seams MUST be welded and riveted in the assembly process.

Required high temperature glass filled polysulfone cage support runner system.

The rack system must be fully autoclavable (250 degrees).

Must have an ergonomic single finger motion docking with auto-locking feature for the animal cage to be housed on the rack.

Must have tethered exhaust/supply manifold caps.

Air tubes entering and exiting the cage from the rack must be 304 stainless steel.

Exhaust plenums will NOT go positive and must be guaranteed to remain negative to the room, regardless of blower Air Changes per Hour (ACH).

IVC rack MUST accommodate a 142 in cage system with DLAR current inventory. This is a massive cost saving option and to reduce cage space inventory

Exhaust plenums MUST be compatible with Sentinel holder (i.e. plenum configuration is the ideal design to collect material for PCR testing).

The blower-mounted options MUST include rack-mounted.

Power consumption MUST be between 7-23 watts (or slightly higher 25 watts). Due to only a 50-amp emergency power back up system.

The unit noise level MUST be around 20 dB.

Supply air MUST enter at cage bottom, and air at the cage level.

5-inch and 3.5-inch diameter stainless steel casters with gray polypropylene wheels with sealed ball bearings and four foot-operated brakes

Must be sanitizable and must be compatible with the current cage systems.

Cannot be higher than 78 inches due to maximum door height.

Must be compatible with our current cage inventory. This is due to lack of storage space within the university.

Safety – lightweight, ergonomic features, low vibration and noise.

Training – provide set-up and training of operators.

Trash removal – included.

Should be focused on best value and past performance.

Horizontal airflow manifolds with tethered dual silicone end caps for ease of cleaning.

Gasketed cage lid ensures safety and protection from damage.

Compact nesting and stacking for more efficient autoclaving throughput.

Clear polysulfone plastic animal housing cage system

The intra-cage air velocity MUST be sufficient to remove water/moisture vapor, carbon dioxide and ammonia but low enough to prevent discomfort to the veterinary patients.

The cage system MUST NOT have a baffle system to effectively circulate the airflow.

The air flow pattern should supply air at the cage level and exhaust air at the lid level.

The cage bottom MUST include an internal stainless-steel diffuser.

The gasket MUST be mechanically interlocked into the lid.

Automatic Sealing Exhaust Port (ASEP) on lid MUST utilize a metal snap ring.

It MUST have a hinged retainer in lid.

It MUST have a T-99 HEPA Grade Filter in cage lid with a thickness 0.26 mm.

5-inch and 3.5-inch diameter stainless steel casters with gray polypropylene wheels with sealed ball bearings and four foot-operated brakes

Must be sanitizable and must be compatible with the current cage systems.

Cannot be higher than 78 inches due to maximum door height.
