MINIATURE THERMAL INFRARED CAMERA SPECIFICATIONS

I. BACKGROUND

The ARS Environmental Microbial and Food Safety Laboratory (EMFSL) in Beltsville, Maryland plans to purchase six miniature thermal infrared cameras (ICI 8640 P) to develop multimodal imaging systems for plant health and food safety inspection. Four cameras with 8 mm lens will be used in indoor growth chambers for close-range monitoring of plant health. Two cameras with 12.5 mm lens will be used in a drone and a cart respectively for preharvest food safety inspection of produce fields. Since the thermal cameras will be used along with other sensors (e.g., hyperspectral and 3D depth cameras) in confined space in drone, cart, and growth chambers, each camera with the lens must be small and weigh less than 0.15 kg. Also, the temperature measurement accuracy of each thermal camera should not be worse than 1°C to achieve the acceptable sensing results.

II. REQUIREMENTS

Miniature thermal infrared cameras must be capable of the following:

· Infrared wavelength range: 7~14 μm

· High pixel resolution >= 640×512

· High temperature measurement accuracy <= 1°C

· Broad temperature measurement range: −20~120 °C

· Broad operation temperature range: −40~80 °C

· Thermal sensitivity (NETD) < 20 mK

· High frame rate >= 30 Hz

· High dynamic range >= 14-bit

· High pixel operability >= 99 %

· Small size <= 5 cm × 5 cm × 5 cm (without lens)

· Light weight <= 0.15 kg (with lens)

· Power requirement <= 1 W

· IP rating >= IP54

· Camera connection: USB

· Interface with LabVIEW and Python programming software

· Can be integrated into drones for aerial thermal imaging applications
