About this file

This document is a detailed specification sheet for ground mesh required by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) for an antenna array installation. The specification outlines precise requirements for 33 ground mesh units to be used in a sub-scale receive array system for the Homeland Defense Over-the-horizon radar program. Key technical specifications include: #10 Copper-cad steel wire with 30-40% conductivity, silver brazed joints, mesh dimensions of 216in. x 2400in. with an 8in. overhang (total outside dimensions 232in. x 241in.), and a 12in. x 12in. grid size. Each mesh is to be individually rolled on a disposable spindle and delivered via flatbed truck, with the purpose of creating a ground plane for improved electrical conductivity in the antenna system.

SPECIFICATIONS FOR GROUND MESH

SPECIFICATIONS FOR GROUND MESH

I. OVERVIEW: The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) has a critical need for copper ground mesh for an antenna array installation being planned for this year. This mesh is key to create a ground plane for better electrical conductivity for the antenna.

II. BACKGROUND: NRL has been tasked by the Air Force under the Homeland Defense Over-the-horizon radar program to help design and develop an entire system architecture for a future over-the-horizon radar system. As part of this design process, we are validating the theoretical design concept by building and testing a subscale receive array system. A key component for this receiver array is the ground mesh. The installation of this system will provide NRL with a system on the east coast within easy accessibility, allowing us to plan and execute tasks with both cost and time benefits. Currently, we are forced to use installations that are on the western areas of CONUS making logistics and execution of tests complex and costly. Without the ground mesh in place, the array installation will have a degraded system performance and given that this is a sub-scale array the degraded performance can severely impact research objectives of current and future programs.

This system is key to meet the obligations of several currently running programs for external sponsors (ONR, WU# 991R68, HLD, DARPA).

III. SPECIFICATIONS AND SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS FOR GROUND MESH:

The Ground Mesh SHALL include the following specifications:

A. WIRE TYPE: The ground mesh shall be made of #10 Copper-cad steel (30 or 40% conductivity)

B. JOINT TYPE: Silver brazed at each joint

C. DIMENSIONS: The ground mesh shall measure 216in. X 2400in. with an 8in. overhang at all edges. Thus, the total outside mesh dimensions shall be 232in. x 241in. inclusive of the overhang.

D. MESH SIZE: 12in. x 12in. (grid: length X width)

E. QUANTITY: 33

F. PACKING AND DELIVERY: Each mesh shall be individually rolled on a disposable spindle.

The mesh shall be wrapped and bound for protection. Delivery is preferred on a flatbed truck for ease of removal at the installation site.
