General:
The Kaibab N.F. desires to obtain a quote to design, provide, and install an off-grid photovoltaic (PV) system to provide lighting, switches, and receptacles for a 2-room cabin and a PV equipment shed. The installation shall include pole mounted PV panels, underground circuit between the PV panels and equipment shed, exterior conduit and interior surface conduit and wiring, load center(s), wall switches, LED interior light fixtures, motion-detector operated LED exterior porch light fixture, and one 110-volt outlet each in the cabin and equipment shed.
The 314 sq. ft., wood-framed, 2 room cabin was built in 1934. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which precludes mounting the PV panels on the roof as well as shading from nearby trees. The cabin is currently equipped with 2 wall mounted propane gas lamps that will be removed by the Forest Service along with the associated copper tubing prior to the start of this project. The cabin will be used for short-term rental to the general public seasonally from May-September. A propane space heater provides heating.
A 25 sf shed adjacent to the back end of the cabin shall be used for installing the PV equipment and load center.
This shed will be locked to prevent access by cabin users.
Location: The cabin is located approximately 16 miles east of the town of Tusayan, AZ. GPS coordinates are 35o 58’ 06” N, 111o 56’ 47” W, elevation 7150’, in Township 30 N, Range 4 E, Section 22, G&SRM. There are two access routes:
Access #1: The cabin is located approximately 16 miles east of the town of Tusayan on a graded gravel road.
Take Forest Road (FR) 302 east from Highway 64, just south of the Grand Hotel in Tusayan, for approximately 15 miles. At the junction of FR 302 and FR 310, turn left onto FR 310 and go approximately 1.6 miles to the Grandview Lookout Tower/Arizona Trail Trailhead complex. The entrance road to the cabin is just past the Trailhead parking area.
Access #2: (Note: Access #2 requires an entrance fee into the Grand Canyon National Park.) Via Arizona Highway 64 in the Grand Canyon National Park, from the South Entrance Station drive north 4 miles to a right turn on AZ
64. Follow AZ 64 east approximately 8.7 miles where you will see a left turn sign for Grandview Point. Continue driving east on AZ 64 for 2.0 more miles, to approximately milepost 252.7, and turn right onto an unmarked gravel road. Follow this road (which will become FR 310) 1.5 miles to the Grandview Lookout Tower/Arizona Trail Trailhead complex, the cabin entrance road is just north of the Trailhead parking area.
Scope of work Contractor shall size the PV system to power the loads shown on the drawings and described herein, including a minimum of 15% spare capacity for future connections. Expected use of the lighting is for morning and evening use by the occupants, frequent operation of all light fixtures simultaneously is expected. Contractor is responsible for securing all materials and equipment at the site during construction. Previous underground utility line excavation adjacent to the buildings showed generally sandy-clay soils to 3+‘ deep with a few rocks up to 6” in size.
Wiring for all light fixtures, switches, and outlets shall be concealed in wall and ceiling spaces where feasible or installed in plastic surface conduit and boxes such as Wiremold or Panduit when concealed installation is impractical. All work shall conform to the National Electric Code (NEC). The Contractor shall provide submittals of all equipment and light fixtures, along with PV system design calculations and one-line schematics, for review prior to installation.
