About this file

Attachment 1 is a historical document and image detailing the Quadrangle Clock Bell Tower at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston. The document provides historical context about the structure, noting its origins after the Civil War in 1876, when construction began on the Quadrangle and water/watch tower. The U.S. Army moved from the Alamo in 1877, establishing the Quartermaster Depot, and the water and watch tower were converted to a clock tower in 1882.

The accompanying image showcases a tall stone clock tower with a clock face, situated on a grassy area with trees and flagpoles displaying the American and Texas state flags. The tower is constructed of light-colored stone blocks and appears to be part of a historic military installation. This document serves as a supporting attachment for a federal contract opportunity (Solicitation Number: FA301625Q6058) for clock tower repair services, providing historical context for the structure that will be the subject of maintenance and restoration work.

Fort Sam Houston, Texas Quadrangle Clock Bell Tower

The Quadrangle at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, or the “Quad,” as it is commonly known, is an iconic structure rich in history dating back to the end of the Civil War.

After the Civil War in 1876, construction began on the Quadrangle, as well as the water and watch tower.

The U.S. Army started its move from the Alamo in 1877 and established the Quartermaster Depot, with the headquarters element soon to follow.

The water and watch tower were later converted to the clock tower in 1882. Both the Quadrangle and the clock tower are the oldest buildings on JBSA-Fort Sam Houston.
