About this file

This is a Purchase Description detailing requirements for one Nikon Ts2-Fl Inverted Microscope System with DS10 Camera for the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) at NIH. The system will be used for observation of mammalian cells and C. elegans organisms via brightfield, phase contrast, emboss contrast, and fluorescence imaging techniques to support cell line development research.

The required system includes the Eclipse Ts2-FL Inverted Fluorescence Microscope with LED illuminator, ELWD condenser, and multiple objective lenses (4x-40x); Epi Fluorescence LED and Filter Sets for DAPI, FITC/GFP, and TxRd imaging; Nikon DS10 Color Digital Camera Head (23.9 MP); NIS-Elements Documentation software with multi-license; and on-site installation and training. Key accessories include USB 3.2 connections, surge suppressor, F-mount adapters, and lens cleaning kit. Delivery is to be determined after purchase order award, with no specified period of performance or options included. The system must allow for imaging cells within dishes and flasks during growth stages while minimizing contamination risk by eliminating the need to transport samples outside the cell culture room.

Version 11-30-2016-1 FAR Part 11—Describing Agency Needs

PURCHASE DESCRIPTION

1. Statement of Need and Purpose: Acquisition of one (1x) Nikon Ts2-Fl Inverted Microscope System w/ DS10 Camera to allow for better observation of mammalian cells and model organisms such as C. elegans via Brightfield, Phase Contrast, Emboss Contrast, and Fluorescence. This will support our increased efforts in cell line development as the system has increased quality and clarity of view. The system will also allow for imaging of cells within dishes and flasks during their growth stages, including cells with fluorescently-labeled proteins. This will decrease the chances of cell culture contamination as we will no longer need to transport flasks outside of the cell culture room for observation and imaging of fluorescence.

2. Background Information and Objective: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the nation’s leading medical research agency and the primary Federal agency whose mission is to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability, conducting, supporting and making medical discoveries that improve people’s health and save lives.

The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) is a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which mission it is to catalyze the generation of innovative methods and technologies that will enhance the development, testing and implementation of diagnostics and therapeutics across a wide range of human diseases and conditions.

NCATS is tasked with identifying and developing novel small molecule, peptide and biologic leads against a wide spectrum of human disease targets, which it accomplishes by screening thousands of compounds in collaboration with both intra-and extramural researchers. In pursuit of this goal, the Center has a strong internal transdisciplinary team of scientists who continually develop and optimize biological assays and discover novel small molecules for application against a wide range of human diseases.

The Assay Development and Screening Technologies (ADST) laboratory focuses on the advancement of therapeutic development through research and implementation of innovative assay designs and chemical library screening methods related to disease biology. Towards this effort there is a large emphasis on mammalian cell culture and model organism, including C. elegans, assays to model human pathophysiologies. These systems require continuous maintenance and visual validation of cell/organism health and proliferation for both assay development and high-throughput screening efforts. As such it is necessary to have fully operational and equipment cell culture and nematode culture areas for the growth and use of these model systems.
