100 LRS, Wheel & Tire Containers at

Royal Air Force (RAF) Mildenhall Rev. 1, 18 February 2026

1. Introduction

1.1. Mission: The 100th Logistics Readiness Squadron at RAF Mildenhall provides support to 2 wings: 100th Air Refueling Wing and 352nd Special Ops Wing.

1.2. Background: The 100th Air Refueling Wing (ARW) and 352nd Special Operations Wing (SOW), operating from RAF Mildenhall, play a critical role in global air refueling and special operations capabilities. The 100th ARW provides vital air refueling support using KC-135 Stratotankers, enabling rapid global reach for U.S. and allied forces. The 352nd SOW executes special operations missions utilizing C-130 variants, requiring agility and responsiveness in diverse and demanding environments. The 100th Logistics Readiness Squadron (LRS) supports these missions through its Mobility Readiness Space Packages (MRSP), ensuring rapid deployment capabilities for exercises and real-world contingencies. A significant bottleneck exists in the current process of preparing and deploying aircraft wheels and tires, hindering the rapid generation of ACE packages and directly impacting mission readiness. The current reliance on manual palletization and rudimentary protection methods results in lengthy preparation times, potential damage to critical components, and inefficiencies in resource utilization. The Rapid Deployment Aircraft Wheel & Tire System (RDAWTS) directly addresses these challenges by providing a streamlined, secure, and efficient solution for deploying aircraft wheels and tires.

1.3. Scope: This innovation focuses on developing and implementing a RDAWTS to replace the current manual and inefficient process for preparing and deploying aircraft wheels and tires within the 100th LRS MRSP program. This system will provide a standardized, secure, and rapidly deployable solution, directly supporting the missions of the 100th ARW and 352nd SOW.

1.4. Key Features of the RDAWTS:

1.4.1. Rapid Deployment Capabilities: Pre-fabricated, ruggedized kits specifically designed for KC-135 and C-130 wheels and tires, significantly reducing the 2-3 hour palletization and weatherproofing time to near-instant deployment. This directly supports an agile scheme of maneuver and enables rapid response to wartime taskings.

1.4.2. Enhanced Protection & Security: Durable, weatherproof containers with integrated internal padding and secure locking mechanisms to prevent damage during transit. This ensures the operational readiness of wheels and tires upon arrival, eliminating the risk of damage.

1.4.3. Ergonomic Design & Safety: Designed for safe and efficient handling, minimizing the risk of injury to personnel during loading, unloading, and transport. The kits will include clear markings for weight and handling instructions.

1.4.4. Optimized Space Utilization: Fully stackable kits that collapse to approximately 10 inches when empty, significantly reducing the wheel and tire footprint in warehouse and deployment locations.

This aligns with the base's strategic posture as a forward operating location.

1.4.5. Forklift Accessibility & Tie-Down Points: Design incorporates two-sided forklift accessibility and multiple integrated tie-down points, ensuring secure transport on various platforms (C-130, KC-135, truck) and efficient loading/unloading at forward operating locations.

1.4.6. Modular & Scalable: Designed to be modular and scalable, allowing for easy adaptation to different aircraft wheel and tire configurations and deployment requirements.

1.5. Direct Mission Ties:

1.5.1. 100th ARW (KC-135): The RDAWTS will ensure the rapid deployment of spare wheels and tires for

KC-135 aircraft, enabling quick recovery from maintenance issues and maintaining the aircraft's high operational tempo for air refueling missions. This directly impacts the wing's ability to provide critical air refueling support to U.S. and allied forces globally.

1.5.2. 352nd SOW (C-130): The RDAWTS will facilitate the rapid deployment of spare wheels and tires for C-130 variants used in special operations missions. This is crucial for maintaining operational readiness in austere and potentially hostile environments, ensuring the wing's ability to execute its demanding and time-sensitive missions.

1.5.3. Supports ACE (Agile Combat Employment): By drastically reducing deployment preparation time and ensuring the safe and reliable arrival of mission-critical wheel and tire components, the RDAWTS directly supports the ACE concept, enabling the rapid deployment of forces and equipment to dispersed locations, enhancing survivability and operational effectiveness.

1.6. Impact: The RDAWTS will significantly enhance the operational readiness and agility of the 100th ARW and 352nd SOW, directly supporting their critical global missions. By streamlining the deployment process, protecting critical assets, and optimizing resource utilization, the RDAWTS will empower Airmen, foster a Ready culture, and strengthen the overall strategic posture of the Air Force. The potential for standardization force-wide would further amplify these benefits, creating a unified and efficient deployment process for all units.
