Specifications for Charpy Impact Machine at Arnold Air Force Base, TN;

Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC)

Provide all materials, labor, and equipment necessary to provide a new fully functional Charpy Impact Machine. Refurbished or remanufactured parts are not authorized for this requirement.

This specification is for the procurement of an enclosed and semi‐automated Charpy impact tester with 450J capacity and analysis software. The primary use for this unit is impact testing for weld qualification and for verification of material properties on purchased product. This is a replacement for the existing impact tester; this replacement instrument addresses safety concerns with this loading the samples and initiating impact.

1) Instron 450MPX Impact Testing System or equivalent pendulum impact test machine with the following features and accessories:

• Maximum impact capacity of 900 joules with upgraded hammer.

• Automatic test start after door closure to allow quick testing for non‐ambient specimens as

• specified in ASTM E23.

• Motorized hammer lift and automatic return to start location.

• Safety enclosure with all access locations interlocked to prevent operation while doors are open.

• Automated built‐in system check to ensure calibration prior to use.

• Base design that meets standards outlined in ASTM E23.

• Maximum lower limit impact potential energy of 1 Joule

• Power supply of 230VAC maximum.

• Charpy test configuration with 8mm radius according to ASTM E23.

• Low and high energy NIST samples for performance validation.

2) Controller with software interface enabling evaluation of Force vs Displacement as outlined in

ASTM E2298

• Software needs a data collection rate of 1 kHz.

• The machine needs a high accuracy, high resolution angle encoder. The resolution shall be 0.009 degrees/count or better.

3) Charpy Specimen Cooling Bath

• 4 liter volume

• 120V max

• Ability to maintain ±2°F

• Tongs for cooled specimen handling

4) Concrete foundation for the test frame with 3600lb nominal weight

5) Installation, Calibration, and Warranty

• Shipping and Installation

• Calibration standards and certifications according to ASTM E23

• Factory Warranty
