About this file
This document provides brand name or equal specifications for a thermal desorption unit and micro chamber volatile collection system. The Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service Field Research Implementation and Information Delivery Pacific West Area is soliciting these products through solicitation number 12905B23Q0240 to analyze insect antennae responses to volatile chemicals. Minimum requirements include an automated thermal desorption unit, Unity-XR, with the ability to simultaneously analyze volatiles and semi-volatiles, re-collect split flows to enable repeat analysis, fit in a small space, be compatible with specified collection tubes, cool without cryogenics, control carrier gas pneumatics, and include compatible software. A microchamber extraction system, CTE 250, is also required which can collect volatiles from four samples simultaneously onto sorbent tubes through individually controlled chambers maintaining precise gas flow and with the ability to heat to at least 250C. Related accessories, installation, warranty, service, and support terms are outlined.

Brand Name or Equal Specifications
The procurement request is for a Markes thermal desorption unit (UNITY-xr) and Micro Chamber 250 with toggles. The same thermal desorption platform with a 100 sample capacity (TD100-xr) was procured in FY20 to be used with an Agilent GC/MS. The new unit (UNITY-xr) will be used with an existing Agilent GC that was modified to detect insect antennae responses to volatile chemicals (GC-EAD). The same thermal desorption platform as TD100-xr with a single sample injection capacity (UNITY-xr) is being requested to be connected to the GC-EAD system. This can allow that the exactly same sample that was injected to the GC-EAD system using UNITY-xr can be re-collected and re-injected to a GC/MS with the existing TD100-xr to greatly improve the identification process of insect behavior modifying chemicals such as attractants and repellents.
Minimum requirements of thermal desorption unit and micro chamber volatile collection system:
C. Automated Thermal desorption unit Unity-XR
1. Must allow the simultaneous analysis of volatiles and semi-volatiles.
2. Must be able to re-collect all the split flows to enable repeat analysis.
3. Must have a small form factor (less than 18 cm width x 55 cm depth x 50 cm height) to fit in a tight space next to an existing GC-EAD.
4. Must be compatible with 3.5” (89 mm) length x 0.25” (6.4 mm) O.D. thermal desorption collection tubes
5. Must cool packed focusing trap to sub-zero temperatures without cryogenic cooling (i.e.
no liquid nitrogen used).
6. Must have an electronic pneumatics control (EPC) of carrier gas through the thermal desorber
7. The Automated Thermal Desorption Software must be fully compatible with the Agilent GC software D. Microchamber Extraction System µ-CTE 250
1. Must collect volatiles from at least 4 samples simultaneously onto sorbent packed tubes
2. Each chamber must have its own flow shut off valve/switch, so flow to individual microchambers can be turned off/on.
3. Chambers must have a minimum volume of 100 mL.
4. Must maintain a precise constant air/gas flow through each sample chamber.
5. Chamber can be heated at least to 250°C
6. Equivalent brand name accessories are U-GAS03 Single regulator pneumatics accessory (for carrier gas regulation) and M-HUMID-MCTE Humidifier for µ-CTE E. Installation, Warranty, Service, and Support Requirements
1. Must include full system installation, performance verification, and familiarization by a factory trained service engineer onsite. The system must include hardware and software technical phone support at no additional cost.
2. The performance verification must include an instrument detection limit report
3. Must include standard 1 year warranty on parts & labor.
4. Must include manufacturer support for a reasonable standard response time (1 week or less), for any repairs and maintenance with unlimited onsite repair with no additional cost for travel, labor, and parts for GCMS system for the 1 year warranty period.
