1.2 DEFINITIONS

A. Remove: Detach items from existing construction and dispose of them off-site unless indicated to be recycled.

B. Existing to Remain: Leave existing items that are not to be removed and that are not otherwise indicated to be salvaged or re-installed.

1.3 MATERIALS OWNERSHIP

A. Unless otherwise indicated, demolition waste becomes property of Contractor.

B. Historic items, relics, antiques, and similar objects including, but not limited to, cornerstones and their contents, commemorative plaques and tablets, and other items of interest or value to Owner that may be uncovered during demolition remain the property of Owner.

1.6 FIELD CONDITIONS

A. The majority of the work will occur in Day Use Area, which consists of a large lawn with concrete sidewalks, trees, shrubs, picnic tables, and fire grates. Work around the District/Nursery Office will affect how the public access the building. The road slab work near the Nursery Old Tree Processing building abuts a manhole accessing a site drainage system.

C. Storage or sale of removed items or materials on-site is not permitted.

D. Utility Service: Maintain existing utilities indicated to remain in service and protect them against damage during selective demolition operations.

1.7 COORDINATION

A. Arrange selective demolition schedule with the Government so as not to interfere with recreational operations.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS - NA

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Verify that utilities have been located and marked before starting selective demolition operations. See Drawings and assist the Government in locating the lawn sprinkler heads and lines that may be affected.

1. Provide protection to ensure safe passage of people around selective demolition areas.

B. Remove temporary barricades and protections, in agreement with the Government, at the industry standard time frame for this type of work. The new concrete must not be damaged or defaced prior to allowing the public access along the new sidewalks.

3.4 SELECTIVE DEMOLITION, GENERAL

A. General: Demolish and remove existing construction only to the extent required by new construction and as indicated. Use methods required to complete the Work within limitations of governing regulations and as follows:

1. Proceed with selective demolition systematically.

2. Neatly cut the designated sections of concrete sidewalk as to not damage the existing concrete sidewalk or road slab that is to remain.

B. Site Access and Temporary Controls: Conduct selective demolition and debris-removal operations to ensure minimum interference with roads, streets, walks, walkways, and other adjacent occupied and used facilities. This includes minimizing damage to lawn.

C. Removed and Recycled Items:

1. Concrete chunks to be recycled shall have any and all rebar and wire mesh material removed. If these materials can not be separated from the concrete chunks, the Contractor shall remove these concrete chunks from site.

2. Transport items to be recycled to a location in the Day Use Area parking lot as approved by the CO.

D. Existing Items to Remain:

1. Protect existing concrete sidewalks, concrete road slab, lawn sprinkler lines and heads, picnic tables, fire grates, buildings, trees, and shrubs from damage during transport to the approved location in Day Use Area parking area.

2. Prior to placing concrete on the existing subbase material (sand), spray or otherwise wet the base material thoroughly to provide a stable surface for the concrete. It is advisable to wet the base material until there is very little visual displacement or as approved by the CO.

3. Compact existing base material (sand) by running mechanical compaction equipment on the surface to receive the concrete a minimum of 3 passes or until visual displacement is not seen.

4. Do not proceed until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected and the CO has approved the site ready for concrete placement.

3.2 JOINTS

A. Construct joints true to line, with faces perpendicular to surface plane of concrete.

B. Construction Joints: Coordinate with concrete placement sequence.

1. Install so strength and appearance of concrete are not impaired, at locations indicated on Drawings or as approved by CO.

2. Place joints perpendicular to main reinforcement.

C. Control Joints: Form weakened-plane control joints, sectioning concrete sidewalks every four

(4) feet per industry standards for this type of work. For the 14’ by 60’ concrete slab near the Shelter House, form weakened-plane control joints as Shown on the Drawings. Construct control joints for a depth equal to at least one fourth of concrete thickness as follows:

1. Grooved Joints: Form control joints after initial floating by grooving and finishing each edge of joint to a radius of 1/8 inch. Repeat grooving of control joints after applying surface finishes. Eliminate groover tool marks on concrete surfaces.

2. Sawed Joints: Form control joints with power saws equipped with shatterproof abrasive or diamond-rimmed blades. Cut 1/8-inch-wide joints into concrete when cutting action does not tear, abrade, or otherwise damage surface and before concrete develops random cracks.
