About this file

This document is a sole source justification letter for the United States Air Force Academy to procure Turnitin's Gradescope online grading platform and associated components from Turnitin, LLC. Gradescope is an online grading platform that allows instructors to grade paper-based, online, bubble sheet, and programming assignments on a unified platform. It utilizes a database of over 750 million graded questions from 2,600 educational institutions to power artificial intelligence features that group similar student answers and provide machine-assisted grading. There are no other platforms that offer the same breadth of grading capabilities across all assignment types along with AI-assisted grading functionality. Annual subscription fees for Gradescope include unlimited instructor training resources and customer support. The platform can integrate with most major learning management systems and offers an LTI tool to enhance integrations. The related federal contract opportunity is for the USAFA to procure a Turnitin Feedback Studio/Gradescope software license from the Department of the Air Force Headquarters at the Air Force Academy.

United States Air Force Academy, Turnitin’s online grading platform, Gradescope, including its associated components, is a single-source product developed and sold by Turnitin, based in Oakland, CA. Our product is a unique service that is not offered by any other vendor or reseller in a similar format. The product may be procured only from Turnitin, LLC, at the address listed below. Gradescope is an item for which competition is precluded due to the large dataset (more than 750+ million questions graded) we’ve amassed from over 2,600 educational institutions. It is this massive database that makes the development of our proprietary AI (artificial intelligence) driven features possible.

Gradescope is a web application that enables instructors to grade paper-based, online, bubble sheet, and programming assignments on a unified online platform, and to distribute graded work back to the student. For some assignments, advanced image processing and machine learning is applied to group student answers together based on content. We leverage our massive dataset in order to develop this technology. There is no other platform that allows instructors to grade all these types of assignments (paper-based, online, bubble sheet, programming) on one platform, and to receive machine-learning assistance for their grading.

The complete Gradescope solution includes a grading product for both automated and manual grading of code as well as AI-powered assisted grading, which rapidly increases the speed and efficiency of grading for multiple choice, short answer math and short answer text questions.

● Gradescope’s programming assignments product allows students to upload code to the Gradescope platform and their instructors to review and grade that code. Instructors can manually create a rubric and provide feedback via quantitative scoring as well as comments made directly on students’ code. Instructors may also use our autograding feature by uploading test cases that are automatically run against students’ submitted code. Instructor-defined commentary is shown to the student based on their code’s performance against the tests.

● The Gradescope AI-powered assisted grading allows an individual instructor to grade just a few sample student answers and have Gradescope AI grade the remaining answer set, applying the same detailed feedback as the instructor. This reduces time spent grading by 50% or more, with increasing returns to scale as the number of assignments increases.

Gradescope is accessible via a web-based interface and is hosted on Amazon Web Services.

Gradescope can be integrated with most standard learning management systems such as Blackboard, Canvas, Brightspace (formerly “Desire2Learn”), and Moodle. Gradescope also offers an LTI tool (Learning Tools Interoperability) that further enhances integrations.

Annual subscription fees include unlimited access to free videos and documentation for instructors, TAs and students to learn how to use Gradescope as well as high-quality customer support.
