Salient Characteristics – 100 LRS Truck Retriever

Mission: The primary mission of the 100th Logistics Readiness Squadron (100 LRS) Ground Transportation division is to promptly and securely retrieve stricken vehicles and passengers. The Ground Transportation team holds exclusive responsibility for the removal of all 614 vehicles assigned to RAF Mildenhall. This includes vehicles that obstruct mission-critical aircraft movement on installation taxiways due to breakdowns, accidents, runway intrusions, or security violations as requested by Security Forces. The deployment of a European truck retriever significantly enhances our response capabilities, particularly considering the narrower roads in the United Kingdom compared to those in the United States.

Background: The primary historical application of this vehicle has been the retrieval of stricken USAF vehicles within a 120-mile radius of RAF Mildenhall. Unfortunately, the unavailability of the American truck retriever, which averages up to 98 days in maintenance due to obsolete parts or the need to order replacements from the United States, has necessitated the use of contractors for vehicle and personnel retrieval.

Scope: The acquisition of a European model truck retriever offers several advantages, such as a substantial reduction in maintenance downtime for repairs, ease of local procurement for spare parts, and a low-profile vehicle for improved force protection. Additionally, this investment will eliminate the necessity to engage local contractors for vehicle and personnel retrieval, thereby enabling a rapid response to incidents.
