Project FARO Orbis Premium Mobile Laser Scanner

General Information

1.0 Scope of Work

The USDA Forest Service IITF in San Juan P.R intends to award a purchase order. To obtain a FARO Orbis Premium Mobile Laser Scanner. The requirement includes one FARO Orbis Kit Premium USA, one FARO orbis-battery, one SCENE- Perpetual License, and one Super Power User Notebook high-end notebook computer. The applicable North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code for this requirement is 334511. FARO Orbis Premium provides a powerful and efficient solution for forest management, enabling faster, more accurate, and more comprehensive data collection for tasks such as forest inventory, resource planning, and conservation efforts.

As part of the

2.0 Background

During September 2022, the Research areas were impacted by sustained storm damage from winds and excessive rain as a result of Hurricane Fiona. During this natural disaster, sustained winds of 85 miles per hour were recorded, and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a rainfall event that exceeded 30 inches in parts of Puerto Rico.

To better understand the effects of hurricanes and complete a forest inventory, it is vital to use equipment like the one we expect to acquire. The FARO Orbis Premium delivers vibrant, high-resolution 8K panoramic images and enhanced colored point clouds, providing detailed visual data for engineers, surveyors, urban planners, and public safety professionals. The integration of Flash Technology boosts point density in critical areas, accelerating capture times and providing a comprehensive 3D view of sites. An IP54 rating protects the Orbis Premium from dust and water splashes, ensuring robust performance in rugged environments.

The requirement is for a FARO Orbis Premium Mobile Laser Scanner. The requirement includes one FARO Orbis Kit Premium USA, one FARO orbis-battery, one SCENE- Perpetual License, and one Super Power User Notebook high-end notebook computer. The International Institute of Tropical Forestry Research and Development in San Juan P.R. objective’s is to develop and deliver knowledge which supports the conservation of forests, grasslands, wildlife, and watersheds of the American tropics. Priority research areas include forest ecology, ecosystem functions and services, disturbance ecology, climatology, watershed management and restoration, urban ecology and stewardship, and natural resources policy and governance, primarily in Latin America and the Caribbean. All our research areas are inside the forest, nearby to coast areas and fair away sites without power electricity. The FARO Orbis Premium mobile laser scanner is well-suited for use in forests, offering a combination of speed, accuracy, and versatility for various forestry applications. Its SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) technology allows for efficient mapping of large areas, even in dense vegetation, while its IP54 rating ensures durability in rugged environments. Additionally, the Orbis Premium's Flash scanning feature provides high-accuracy static scans for detailed measurements. The Orbis Premium's mobile scanning capabilities allow for rapid data capture across large forest areas, significantly reducing the time and effort required compared to traditional methods. The scanner captures high-density point clouds, enabling the creation of detailed 3D maps of the forest, including tree locations, sizes, and terrain features. The Orbis can be mounted on a backpack for navigating rough terrain, on a vehicle for covering larger areas, or used with a monopod for stationary Flash scans, providing flexibility for different forest environments. The Flash scanning feature provides high-accuracy static scans with a precision of up to 2mm, ideal for tasks like tree diameter measurements and timber volume calculations. The integrated camera captures 360-degree images, allowing for colorization of the point cloud data, which enhances the visualization and analysis of the forest environment. In essence, the FARO Orbis Premium provides a powerful and efficient solution for forest management, enabling faster, more accurate, and more comprehensive data collection for tasks such as forest inventory, resource planning, and conservation efforts.

FARO SCENE Software is specifically designed for all FARO scanning solutions and third-party laser scanners. Process and manage scan data efficiently and easily by using automatic target recognition, scan registration and validation. Generate high-quality data in full color quickly and conveniently by incorporating images from automated targetless and target-based scan positioning. Use Interactive scan registration for a more intuitive visual representation of automatic registration results. With Hybrid registration, integrate survey control points with cloud-to-cloud registration. SCENE features an impressive Virtual Reality (VR) View, allowing users to experience and evaluate captured data in the VR environment.

The requested equipment shall be lightweight, all-in-one equipment that precisely and reliably delivers data.

Shall have a software that delivers a complete overview of the data that is collected on the field. Since our research projects areas are located in a tropical region, we are affected by tropical systems yearly; this means that the equipment shall have the ability to endure extended periods of harsh environmental conditions.
