Where lines are installed under roadways and parking areas, perform tests after completion of final subgrade preparation and prior to application of surface courses. Notify Contracting Officer at least 48 hours prior to testing.

B. Prepare each section for testing, using adequate bracing; protect system equipment susceptible to damage by test pressures; make provision for installation of Government pressure gauge in parallel with Contractor's gauge, if so requested; and maintain services where required.

C. Test on gravity lines: Each section of the line shall be flushed and cleaned before being tested.

Sanitary gravity line shall be tested by plugging the end of the gravity line at its point of connection with the septic tank, and completely filling the gravity lines with water from lowest to highest point thereof. The gravity lines shall be water-tight at all points.

Fill line with water; eliminate all air. Allow a minimum standing time of 2 hours for materials to absorb water.

Maintain the test pressure within 5 psig for 2 hours by pumping in metered quantities of makeup water.

The line section will have passed the test if the metered makeup water does not exceed that determined by the following formula: Leakage in gallons equals 0.00002 times the nominal diameter of pipe in inches times the length of the test section in feet times the square root of the test pressure in psig. (.00002 x dia” x length’ x √psig.)

Test on pressure sewer lines: Fill line with water; eliminate all air. Allow a minimum standing time of 2 hours for materials to absorb water.

Raise the internal pressure by pumping in water to 50 psi above the maximum anticipated service pressure (ignore water hammer) at the point of test gauge attachment for each prospective line.

The line section will have passed the test if the pressure does not drop more than 5% of the test pressure. Note: Even if tested in sections a final test for each entire line shall be tested.

15151 - 5 of 5

D. Do not use paints, asphalts, tars, or other types of pipe compounds to eliminate leaks.

SECTION 15152

REHABILITATION OF GRAVITY SEWER PIPING AND APPURTENANCES

USING “TRENCHLESS” TECHNOLOGY

PART 1 GENERAL

1 .1 DESCRIPTION

A. The work of this section consists of rehabilitation of gravity sewer piping and appurtenances using “Trenchless” technology as shown on the drawings.

1 .2 DEFINITION

A. Pipe Bursting or Splitting: This method involves the use of a hydraulically powered system to install a new pipe through, and in the place of, an existing pipe. This method includes the operation known as pipe bursting or splitting whereby the hydraulic powered system is used to expand and break away existing pipe and at the same time pull a new pipe into the resulting pipe space. This method also includes the excavation of two pits large enough to accommodate the winching equipment in one pit, and insertion of the new HDPE pipe in the other.

B. Pipe sliplining; whereby a new pipe is inserted into and pulled through an existing pipe of larger diameter, and the existing pipe generally remains intact. This method also includes the excavation of two pits that shall also include temporary shoring, sheeting, and bracing (which may include sheet piling) as necessary for the execution and completion of the work specified in the plans and specifications.

1 .3 SUBMITTALS

A. As specified in Section 01010 and Section 15151.

1 .4 PRODUCT HANDLING

A. Delivery: Handle pipe carefully to ensure delivery at the project site in sound, undamaged condition.

Contracting Officer will reject damaged pipe on site. Contractor shall replace damaged pipe at no additional expense to the Government.

B. Storage: Do not store materials directly on the ground. Adequately store and support new pip to keep clean. Use protective covers where pipe may be damaged by direct sunlight.

1.5 MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT:

A. Measurement and payment will be made as specified in Section 01010.

2 .1 PLASTIC PIPE, JOINTS, JOINING PIPE, AND BACKFILL MATERIAL

A. Pipe:

PART 3 EXECUTION

3 .1 GENERAL

A. The rehabilitation of the gravity sewer system, complete with appurtenances, shall be completed to the lines and grades shown or established in the field. Work will also repair the sewer line through or under the sidewalk to a point directly beneath the sewer outlet of the building as identified by the drawings. Contractor will construct Cleanouts at grade and AS SHOWN AND LOCATED ON THE

DRAWINGS.

3 .2 PITS, TRENCHING AND BEDDING

A. Section 02320.

3 .3 INSTALLATION

A. Inspection: Inspect pipe butt-fused joints for defects before pulling through the old pipe. Defective, damaged, or unsound joints will be re-fused.

B. Setting up and Pulling: Prepare and complete pipe installation in accordance with industry standards and manufacturer’s recommendations. Excavate equipment pits as approved by the COR. After equipment setup, install pipe to maintain required alignment and grade for proper flow. Install sufficient pipe to allow proper connections to adjacent sections of pipe.

15152 - 3 of 3

C. Cleaning: As work progresses, clear the sewer pipe interior of dirt and other debris by keeping swabs in the pipe and pulling them forward past each completed joint.

D. Pipe Cutting: Cutting for closure or other reasons shall be done neatly by methods recommended by the manufacturer. Sharp edges may need to be smoothed to prevent gasket damage where required.

E. Adapter Jointing: Clean gaskets and seats of foreign materials prior to joint assembly. Apply lubricant as recommended by the pipe manufacturer.

1. Push-On Joint: Carefully insert the spigot end into the bell to prevent entry of dirt and incorrect entry angle. With suitable fork tool, crowbar, or by hand, make the joint to the insertion depth recommended by the manufacturer. When the selected pipe uses joints not designed for full depth insertion, prevent further closure of previously completed joints by restraining movement of the installed line while making succeeding joints.

2. Mechanical Joint: Carefully center the spigot in the bell and position the gasket evenly in the seat. Tighten bolts alternately to an even torque, causing the follower gland to expand the gasket uniformly for a tight seal.

3. Plain End Jointing: Install factory made couplers in accordance with manufacturers' directions. Center the coupling collar over the joint and tighten bolts or bands evenly.

3 .4 INSTALLATION OF CLEANOUTS

A. Section 15151.

3 .5 BACKFILLING OF SELECT MATERIAL

3 .6 SEWER LINE MARKING

A. Section 15151.

3 .7 TESTING

A. Section 15151.

3 .8 SURFACE FINISH WORK

A. Section 02320.

The source of pressure shall be isolated before the pressure tests are made.

B. Before turning on gas, close all openings from which gas can escape. Immediately after turning on the gas, check piping system as specified.

C. If the meter test hand moves, or a pressure drop on the gauge is noted, examine all appliances or outlets supplied through the system. If they are shut off and not leaking, there is a leak in the piping system. Shut the gas supply off until repairs have been made, then repeat test.

3 .3 PURGING

A. After piping has been checked, fully purge all gas piping. A suggested method for purging the gas piping to an appliance is to disconnect the pilot piping at the outlet of the pilot valve. Do not purge piping into the combustion chamber of an appliance.

B. Do not purge open end of piping systems into confined spaces or areas where there are sources of ignition, unless space is adequately ventilated, purging rate is controlled, and all hazardous conditions are eliminated.

C. Lighting Pilots: After purging the gas piping, purge all appliances and light pilots before leaving the premises.
