About this file

This Requirements / Specification Document details NIST's procurement of a 4K Cryogen-Free Travelling Cryostat for the Superconductive Electronics Group's Josephson Voltage Standard (JVS) system verification. The cryostat must provide at least 100 mW of cooling power at temperatures below 4 K, with temperature fluctuations less than 20 mK peak-to-peak, and be compatible with NIST's chip packages. Key specifications include a base temperature under 3.5 K, an air-cooled compressor consuming less than 1.5 kW, a standard 19-inch 25 U rack configuration, and passive magnetic shielding that reduces the magnetic field to less than 0.01 times the earth field.

The system requires specific technical features such as a thermometer and heater on the 4 K plate, a temperature controller, an approximately 45 K thermal radiation shield, and multiple RF coax and dc wire connections. The cryostat must be cryogen-free, operate on a standard single-phase 120V/60 Hz outlet, and be designed for ground/air shipping without requiring user assembly. The procurement includes a one-year base manufacturer warranty covering labor and parts, and the delivery is expected to be completed within 10 months after receipt of order to NIST's Boulder, Colorado location.

Requirements / Specification Document

TITLE: Cryostat for Travelling JVS System

Requesting Laboratory / Division / Group:

Communications Technology Laboratory Radio Frequency Technology Division Superconductive Electronics Group (672.06)

General Statement of Need:

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), along with the Superconductive Electronics Group (672.06) develops and disseminates Josephson Voltage Standard (JVS) systems as a primary reference for the SI volt. As part of the verification of the SRI JVS system at the user location, we require a travelling cryostat which can provide at least 100 mW of cooling power at temperatures below 4 K. This cryostat is required to cool packaged chips containing arrays of Josephson junctions, which are the key component of the JVS system. For the Josephson junctions to operate correctly, we also require that the cryostat has temperature fluctuations less than 20 mK peak-to-peak at 4 K near the chip, that it is compatible with our chip packages (both mechanically and electrically), that it is electrically isolated, and that it is magnetically shielded. The system is required to be assembled in a rack compatible with ground/air shipping and operate on standard single phase power outlet, without the need of cooling water, and no assembly at the user site.

Item Specifications and Quantities:

Item 1: 4K Cryogen-Free Traveling Cryostat Quantity: 1 - EACH Specifications: 1.1 Base temperature less than 3.5 K at the JVS chip package and more than 100 mW of cooling power at 4 K at the JVS chip package after delivery, that is, with all of the wiring installed and connected to the JVS chip package.

1.2 Less than 20 mK peak-to-peak temperature fluctuations at

4 K at the JVS chip package after delivery, that is, with all the wiring installed and connected to the chip package dissipating 100 mW dc power.

1.3 Thermometer on the 4 K plate which holds the JVS chip

package, a heater on that 4 K plate, and a temperature controller which can read the thermometer temperature at a speed greater than or equal to 5 samples/sec with a resolution better than 3 mK (at 4 K) and can stabilize the temperature of the plate at any temperature between 3.5 K and 25 K using the thermometer and heater. The controller shall be equipped with a manual heater output control, allowing to user to add a predefined power in addition to the PID control loop to be dissipated in the heater.

1.4 Thermal radiation shield at approximately 45 K.

1.5 Cryogen-free, that is, no additional cryogens shall be added by the user after delivery.

1.6 Air-cooled compressor and consume less than 1.5 kW of

power with single phase 120 V/ 60 Hz outlet.

1.7 Short flexible lines between the compressor and the

coldhead.

1.8 Vacuum pump and parts which are sufficient to evacuate the cryostat before cooldown.

1.9 Standard 19-inch 25 U rack. The entire system, including

compressor, vacuum pump and cryostat must fit within the rack and shall be designed to keep all components secured for ground/air shipping.

1.10 Oxygen-free-high-conductivity (OFHC) copper 4 K plate that is large enough to hold two NIST JVS chip packages with the correct mounting holes. The JVS chip package is 2.54 cm wide by 5.75 cm long; the RF coax is connected in the “long” direction, so additional length is required to fit the SMA connectors and coax.

1.11 Minimum 7 cm in the dimension between the 4 K plate and

the approximately 45 K radiation shield.

1.12 Minimum one blank vacuum flange.

1.13 Minimum of two (2) 0.086-inch diameter RF coax with BeCu outer and silver-plated BeCu inner; heat-sunk at both approximately 45 K and at 4 K; arranged so that it can be connected to the NIST chip package; possess SMA connectors on both the vacuum/room-temperature side and at the 4K plate without any intermediate connectors at 40K. A SMA vacuum feedthrough to atmosphere.

1.14 Two sets of 25 resistive phosphor bronze dc wires; the

resistance per wire shall be less than 10 ohms; the wires shall be in a single looms of 25 wires each; the loom shall be terminated in a 25-pin microD connector at 4 K and a 25-pin

DSUB connector at room temperature/pressure; the wires in the loom shall be arranged in twisted pairs according to the connector pin numbers: 1-14, 2-15, 3-16, 4-17, 5-18, 6-19, 7- 20, 8-21, 9-22, 10-23, 11-24, and 12-25, with a single wire at pin 13; and the loom shall be heat-sunk at both approximately 45 K and at 4 K. Isolation resistance between the loom and the cryostat and between every pair of loom wires shall be at least 100 GΩ.

1.15 Total of four 34 AWG or larger copper magnet wires arranged in two twisted pairs for precision voltage measurements; the two wires in the twisted pair shall be made from wire taken from a single spool; they shall be continuous (including no solder joints or connectors) from room/temperature pressure to the 4K stage; fed-through to room temperature/pressure with at least 10 cm of spare wire at room temperature/pressure; they do not need to be terminated, but must be isolated from the cryostat and feedthrough to room temperature; the isolation between the cryostat and the wire, and between the wires, shall be at least 100 GΩ;

each pair shall be heat-sunk at both approximately 45 K and at 4 K with at least 10 cm of spare wire after the 4 K heat sink;

and the total length of each wire shall be less than 60 cm and should be as short as possible.

1.16 Passive magnetic shielding located in the vacuum can made from Mu-metal, Cryoperm, or similar material. The shield shall reduce the magnetic field at the chip package to less than 0.01 times the earth field.

1.17 Cryostat and 4 K plate shall be electrically isolated from the compressor.

1.18 Heavy duty transportation crate for rack/system shipping

1.19 Plan for cryocooler routine maintenance which may require an additional fee, including an option for on-site maintenance, an option for shipping the cryostat to a vendor, and an option for performing maintenance without disassembling the wiring or disconnecting the JVS chip package (for example, by performing maintenance without removing the cryocooler from the cryostat).

1.20 Cryostat system must be based an established commercial

product with at least one unit operating successfully in the field. Experimental or prototype items are not acceptable.

1.21 Cryostat system shall be a new (not refurbished or

reconditioned) item covered by the original manufacturer’s full warranty. The use of “gray market” components not authorized for sale in the U.S. by the proposer is not acceptable.
