About this file

This Requirements / Specification Document from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) details procurement requirements for two helium compressors to support Josephson Voltage Standard (JVS) systems. The procurement seeks one water-cooled and one air-cooled compressor, both designed to pair with Sumitomo RDK-205D2 coldheads for operation at 4 K. Key specifications include power consumption between 3.6-5.6 kW, approximately 30,000-hour operation time before maintenance, and compatibility with specific cooling requirements (water or air). Both compressors must be established commercial products with proven field performance, new units covered by the original manufacturer's full warranty, and not sourced from "gray market" components.

The compressors will be delivered to NIST's Boulder, Colorado location within 8 weeks after receipt of order. The water-cooled compressor requires 4-9 L/min cooling water at 5-25°C and helium gas pressures of 200 psig (equalization) and 275-315 psig (operating), while the air-cooled compressor needs 17.6 m3/min of cooling air at 60Hz. These compressors are critical components for the Superconductive Electronics Group's development and demonstration of JVS systems, which serve as a primary reference for the SI volt. The procurement emphasizes reliability, with requirements for established commercial products and specific operational parameters.

Requirements / Specification Document

TITLE: Compressors

Requesting Laboratory / Division / Group:

Communications Technology Laboratory Radio Frequency Technology Division Superconductive Electronics Group (672.06)

General Statement of Need:

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), particularly the Superconductive Electronics Group (672.06), develops and disseminates Josephson Voltage Standard (JVS) systems as a primary reference for the SI volt. To effectively support the development and showcasing of the JVS systems, there is a distinct need for both a water-cooled and an air-cooled helium compressor. The compressors are essential components of the larger JVS system and are required to pair with Sumitomo RDK-205D2 coldheads to enable operation at 4 K. The water-cooled compressor enables flexibility in the lab for simultaneous system operations, while the air-cooled model is ideal for demonstrations at conferences, offering portability and ease of setup without requiring extensive cooling infrastructure.
