About this file

This is an executive summary presentation from NASA detailing the Astrobee free-flying robotic system on the International Space Station (ISS). The Astrobee facility consists of three cube-shaped robots (named Bumble, Honey, and Queen), software, and a docking station used for recharging. The system has accumulated 1,215 hours of ISS on-orbit operations and can operate autonomously without crew supervision to conduct surveys across multiple modules.

The robots feature electric fan-based propulsion, three payload bays that can carry up to 1kg each with 14.4V/2A power supply, localization software for autonomous execution, and a robotic arm for "perching". The system supports multiple technology demonstrations and STEM outreach activities, including RFID reconnaissance, gecko material grasping, autonomous logistics management, spacecraft refueling, debris removal, and 3D scanning. Current operational units include two Astrobees (Bumble and Honey) on the ISS, with Queen undergoing repairs on the ground expected to be flight-ready by August 2024. The facility maintains additional flight spares and ground testing units across multiple labs to support ongoing operations.
