About this file
This document is an Executive Summary for the Astrobee free-flying robotic system operated on the International Space Station (ISS). The Astrobee consists of three cubed-shaped robots, software, and a docking station used for recharging. The robots utilize electric fans to fly freely through the microgravity environment of the ISS, and can be operated autonomously or via remote control. The Astrobee facility has a proven four-year track record of operations, with over 1,090 crew hours of utilization by 31 unique crew members. The system is capable of supporting a variety of technology demonstrations and STEM outreach activities. NASA is interested in transitioning operation and utilization of the Astrobee technology to other U.S. entities who would be interested in managing it to further NASA's mission of enabling commercial and research activities in low-Earth orbit. This Executive Summary provides details on the Astrobee hardware and ground assets, on-orbit activities, and facility status.
The related Federal Contract Opportunity is a Request for Information (RFI) seeking feedback from U.S. government, academic, and commercial entities interested in operating and utilizing the Astrobee free-flying robotic system on the ISS. NASA is contemplating entering into an unfunded Space Act Agreement to provide access to the Astrobee hardware, spares, documentation, and safety certifications, while the interested party would be responsible for the costs of planning, use, and sustainment of the on-orbit and ground assets. Responses to the RFI are due by 12:00 pm CST on September 27, 2024.
