About this file

This document consists of vegetation monitoring forms developed by MassWildlife for implementation of baseline vegetation monitoring on Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) across Massachusetts. The forms are standardized data collection tools designed to capture baseline vegetation conditions prior to and following treatment activities across grassland, shrubland, open canopy woodland, and successional forest communities. The protocol includes multiple complementary monitoring methods: a vegetation monitoring protocol form that records plot location, treatment type, topographic position, disturbance evidence, and transect data; a soil profile field data form that documents soil horizon characteristics, moisture conditions, and redoximorphic features; a line-point intercept method form that records vegetation coverage at multiple height strata across transects; and a plot-level plant species inventory form that classifies vegetation by species and cover class across canopy layers from ground layer through upper canopy trees exceeding five meters. Data collection fields include GPS coordinates, elevation, azimuth directions, observer identification, sampling dates, and photographic documentation requirements.

The forms establish a standardized protocol version dated June 2026 for consistent data collection and comparison across monitoring plots. The vegetation monitoring protocol accommodates multiple transects per plot with variable intercept point spacing and includes checkbox options for documenting soil moisture conditions, disturbance types including fire, wind, and insect damage, and topographic characteristics such as slope shape and landform position. The soil profile form specifies pit depths in both centimeters and inches, records Munsell color using NRCS soil taxonomy standards, and documents root density, coarse fragment abundance, and redoximorphic feature presence across multiple categorical levels. The line-point intercept method tables provide 25-point data entries across five vertical strata with ground cover codes for soil, coarse woody debris, litter, rock, lichen, moss, and biocrust. The species inventory form uses seven cover class ranges from dead or less than one percent coverage through seventy-five to one hundred percent coverage, organized by vegetation structural categories including upper canopy trees, tall shrubs, tree saplings, low shrubs and seedlings, herbs, and ground layer species.
