About this file

This document is Amendment 1 to a Request for Bids (RFB) issued by the University of Wisconsin-Madison for the purchase of a Dynamic Light Scattering Apparatus (DLS). The amendment addresses clarifications regarding the instrument's operational requirements and integration capabilities. The DLS apparatus must function as a standalone measurement device while also maintaining compatibility with a multi-angle light scattering apparatus (MALS) connected to a Shimadzu size exclusion-chromatography (SEC) HPLC system. The instrument will primarily be used for monitoring equilibrium systems rather than real-time processes or reactions, though it must support SEC-MALS-DLS measurements as peaks elute from the SEC system. Interested bidders must submit responses online through the ShopUW+ procurement platform at https://bids.sciquest.com/apps/Router/PublicEvent?CustomerOrg=UWisconsin.

The amendment provides technical clarifications to address bidder questions regarding the DLS apparatus specifications and its intended use. Questions posed by potential bidders centered on whether the instrument required process or reactor connections and clarification on the nature of online sampling capabilities. The University confirmed that the apparatus requires adapters enabling coupling to the MALS detector for online measurements within the integrated SEC-MALS-DLS system, but the primary application involves monitoring equilibrium conditions rather than continuous process monitoring. All inquiries regarding this solicitation (Event Number 2024-UWMSN-00425-RFB) should be directed to Mike Marean at mike.marean@wisc.edu.

Amendment #1

2024-UWMSN-00425-RFB

Questions and Answers

Question 1:

The scope mentions online DLS measurements. Does this instrument need to be connected to a process or reactor for sampling or is that a reference that the multi-angle measurements need to be done onboard.?

Answer:

The instrument needs to be able to perform standalone measurements. In addition, the dynamic light scattering apparatus (DLS) needs to be able to be connected to a multi-angle light scattering apparatus (MALS) which is in turn connected to a size exclusion-chromatography (SEC) HPLC system form Shimadzu. In this way, it will be possible to perform SEC-MALS-DLS measurements, directly as peaks elute from the SEC system.

Question 2:

In the General Information, the Scope states "The instrument needs to have adapters enabling it to be coupled to a multi-angle light scattering detector (MALS) for online DLS measurements." Will this instrument be monitoring a process, i.e. online sampling? Or, does that mean that the MAPS or MALS measurements will be performed on the instrument?

Answer:

As also explained in the answer to the above question, the instrument will be used mostly for monitoring equilibrium system, not processes or reactions occurring in real time. However, the instrument needs to be compatible with performing SEC-MALS-DLS measurements, directly as peaks elute from the SEC system.
