About this file

This is a Question & Answer Amendment document for Solicitation No. AMDTCRQ2600858, issued by NIST for a Field Deployable X-Ray Diffraction System.

The amendment clarifies four key technical requirements through contractor questions and NIST responses. The contractor is responsible for providing a control PC and any required software for system operation as part of the deliverable. The XRD system must accommodate both vertical and horizontal mounting configurations with equal importance, with flexible means of securing to surfaces. For safety features, NIST prefers remote emergency stop capability for x-ray generation provided it includes a physical emergency stop button or switch; remote solutions are preferred over in-unit only solutions. Additionally, a visible hardware indicator showing when the x-ray tube is active or the shutter is open must be included, with light indicators and software warnings determined to be sufficient to meet this requirement. These clarifications amend the original Statement of Requirements (SOR) Technical Specifications, particularly section A.

Question & Answer (Q&A) Amendment No. 0001 Field deployable X-Ray Diffraction System

Solicitation No. AMDTCRQ2600858

1. Will NIST supply a PC for the XRD system, or should this be provided by the contractor?

Answer: The contractor shall include a PC for the XRD system being quoted. The Statement of Requirements (SOR) is revised to reflect this requirement. Please see Technical Specification A. h. in the revised SOR that states: “Control PC and any software required for system operation.”

2. In the Statement of Requirements (SOR), Technical Specification A. d. states “Must include means of securing to horizontal and vertical surfaces.” Can NIST disclose if there is a preferred means to secure the unit? Is the unit primarily to be used in a vertical or horizonal direction?

Answer: Both configurations are equally important.

3. Technical Specification A. h. states “Must include means for emergency stop of x-ray generation.” Can NIST indicate if a remote or in-unit solution is preferred?

Answer: Remote capability is preferred, so long as it has a physical emergency stop button / switch.

4. Technical Specification A. i. states “Must include a visible hardware indicator showing when the x-ray tube is active or the shutter is open.” Can NIST specify if a light and software warning is sufficient or is there a more in-depth requirement?

Answer: Light and software warning are sufficient.
