About this file

This is a Special Packaging Instruction (DD Form 2169) for a Diesel Engine Assembly (Part Number 320/41508, National Stock Number 2815-01-672-3847) dated April 23, 2020, Revision A. The document provides comprehensive preservation and packaging requirements for this military engine component.

The preservation process requires several specialized steps and equipment including a crankshaft turning tool, hand pump, preservative hoses, slave oil and fuel filters, and VCI oil mixture (50% VCI oil conforming to MIL-P-46002 and 50% manufacturer's recommended engine oil). The engine must be filled to operational levels with the VCI oil mixture, and preservative conforming to MIL-PRF-21260 Type PE-10 must be pumped through the fuel system while rotating the crankshaft a minimum of two complete revolutions. The flywheel and ring gear teeth must be sprayed with approximately 2ML of VCI oil mixture, and the turbocharger intake ports must receive 1ML and 12-15ML of VCI oil mixture respectively. All engine openings must be sealed with appropriate caps and plugs. The packaging requires Level A protection per MIL-STD-2073-1E, with the engine mounted on an ASTM D7478 base using fabricated steel brackets secured with specified hardware sets (½" X 6" and ½" X 10" carriage bolts, M12 X 40MM, and M10 X 40MM sets). The engine must be wrapped with MIL-PRF-121 Type II material, cushioned with A-A-59135 foam, and placed in a vacuum-sealed foil bag containing desiccant (MIL-D-3464 Type II). The container itself is reusable and must be marked "REUSABLE CONTAINER, DO NOT DESTROY" with warning tags indicating preserved systems and depreservation procedures required before operation.
