THE NAVY MUST EVOLVE ITS TECHNOLOGICAL EDGE, AND AIRWORKS IS
UNIQUELY BUILT FOR THIS NEED
Over the next decade, the Navy must prepare to meet unprecedented technological competition from near-peer adversaries in a multi-domain environment. The transition from operating models and domains focused on counter-insurgency to those focused on Great Power Competition has transformative implications for the Navy’s warfighters. Key among these implications are the systems that power the warfighter. Enhancements to existing platforms, and altogether new technologies that align with a more nimble and versatile capability set, will be critical to offsetting the pacing threat.
We help acquisition offices, industry, and academia accelerate development of tomorrow’s technology, today. AIRWorks brings best-in-class engineering, procurement, and program management experts to expedite contracting by years, and deliver high-quality solutions at an affordable cost as an organic Lead Systems Integrator (LSI). AIRWorks is leading the effort in expediting our nation’s shift toward better, faster, and more cost-effective solutions for the warfighter in new & dynamic operating environments.
AIRWorks is the focal NAWCAD office that rapidly and effectively meets immediate and emerging warfighter needs. We are a unique organic Lead Systems Integrator (LSI) delivering warfighter products and capabilities at an affordable cost and with the speed to enable our warfighters to be successful.

OVERVIEW
GLOBAL WAR ON TERROR
MEETING THE PACING THREAT
EXAMPLES: MEETING THE STATE-OF-THE-MARKET
• CMV-22 Communications Upgrade
• Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) CN-235 Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance (ISR) Rapid Fielding
EXAMPLES: MEETING THE STATE-OF-THE-ART
AIRWorks is at the vertex of this emerging battlespace to accelerate state-of-the-market and state-of-the-art solutions to the warfighter.
Today the United States is facing near-peer adversaries that have nearly reached technological parity. We must respond by pivoting from our decades-long counterinsurgency efforts to meeting the pacing threat. Operating in these new domains will require a technological evolution to build more versatile and advanced warfighting capabilities. To scale long-term, the Navy will need to cultivate the next-generation of its warfighting technologies and be prepared to deliver against emerging capability needs. AIRWorks is prepared to directly serve these needs by aiding the Navy’s technological pivot and meeting new demands in support of the warfighter.
Rival power nations to the United States have recognized technology as the key to geo-political dominance and have undertaken an effort to claim the mantle of technological leadership, investing heavily in 5th generation fighter aircraft, nuclear attack capabilities, hypersonic missiles, advanced satellite technologies, quantum information systems, and other cutting-edge warfighting platforms. These collectively present a major threat to the security of democracy and the Western alliances, demanding a strategic response.
To combat these threats to our national security, our defense industrial base must drive innovation to regain our asymmetric dominance, disrupt our adversaries' advantages, and ensure the safety of our nation.
For decades, the United States has been focused on counterinsurgency (COIN) efforts in the Middle East, operating in largely permissive desert environments within which our country and our allies possessed technological dominance. The technologies developed in the COIN operating domain are still critical and foundational technologies that will continue to support the warfighter for years to come. AIRWorks has the expertise and resources to ensure that current and legacy platforms have the latest technologies and sustainment to control the fight.

The CN-235 aircraft conversion to a maritime patrol platform marks an increase in U.S. and Malaysian forces’ interoperability and domain awareness. The first of three CN- 235s to be built took its first flight out of Indonesia in 2021. The aircraft Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) upgrades were completed by the Naval Air Systems Command’s Security Cooperation Program Office and Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) AIRWorks in partnership with RMAF. (Credit : RMAF)
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
• Upgrades include: a maritime surveillance mission suite, maritime surveillance radar, an electro-optical infra-red turret, line-of-sight datalink and a roll-on/roll-off mission system operator station.
• Work on the two remaining CN-235 aircraft and ground stations is expected to be completed in 2022.
• OEM/Engine details: the medium-range twin-engine transport aircraft originally manufactured by aerospace companies located in Indonesia and Spain.
The NAWC and AIRWorks are delivering post-production modifications to the CMV-22 now that it has reached Initial Operational Capability. Produced by Bell Boeing along side PMA 275, these comms mods are to be provided to the fleet during OEM delivery.
Final development testing and full installation work are to be completed by the end of 2022, in addition to organic software development to interface with operational flight program, alongside industry partners.
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
• Upgrades include: MIDS JTRS Link 16, iridium satellite phones, tactical views displays, and an ICS compliment.
• This effort leverages NAWC talent, organic capabilities, industry partners, and in-house skillsets.
• The fully deployed CMV-22 is envisioned as a replacement for the C-2A Greyhound.

HOW WE DELIVER STATE-OF-THE-ART
In May of 2022, the MQ-8C Fire Scout successfully completed its first demonstration to gather performance data that will inform future mine countermeasure (MCM) prototypes. The SMAMD is an airborne optical sensor that can detect and localize mines and obstacles on land and at sea. The real-time threat detection of the SMAMD enables faster response times and analysis for the warfighter. Through partnership and stakeholder organizations, the teams were able to execute this project in under 24 months.
Single System Multi-Mission Airborne Mine Detection (SMAMD) on MQ-8C Fire Scout
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
• Project Partnerships: MQ-8 Fire Scout program office, the Program Executive Office Unmanned and Small Combatants (PEO USC), NAWCAD, ONR, APSD, WOLF, the Digital Analytics Infrastructure and Technology Advancement Group Prototyping, Instrumentation and Experimentation Department, and Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Two Four (UX-24).
• Breaking barriers: The air vehicle comfortably handled a dual podded system with the heaviest payload carried to date.
In response to warfighter incidents of chronic physical pain due to consistent sitting, AIRWorks redesigned the MH-60S gunner seat to allow for greater flexibility and long-term use. In collaboration with the fleet and organic prototyping capabilities of AIRWorks, the gunner seat redesign increases both mission endurance and performance, while maintaining safety. This effectively allows the Navy to invest in the health and career longevity of its warfighters, on and off the battlefield.
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
• Seat details: includes height adjustment and lumbar support for improved ergonomics, visibility, and overall comfort of the warfighter.
• Entire effort from prototype design, to test, to initial production fielding was done at NAS Patuxent River in under 2 years, reducing normal acquisition cycles.
• Project leaders made data-driven, risk-based decisions to enter test and production simultaneously, expediting the process.
