Specs Civil Solutions.
Question: I noticed a discrepancy between your plans and your specs with regard to the headwall heights on the arch culverts. The plans (sheet C9, Structure Note #1) note a headwall height 1’ over the crown of the arch. The specs (page 58) note a headwall height of 30” over the arch crown.
Can you please verify which dimension you need? Additionally, please confirm if the specs are to be followed to account for vehicular impact on the headwalls.
Answer: There is a discrepancy on sheet C-9 and in the specifications and between the specs and the drawings. The note indicates the headwall should be 12” above the arch crown and the note at the upper left corner drawing indicates the top of asphalt road is 12” above the crown of the culvert, but the headwall extends an additional 18” above this to incorporate an additional “curb”. This is indeed the desired final condition.
The total headwall height is to be 30” above the culvert crown with 12’’ to hold the fill and road surface and an additional 18” curb. This curb is intended to be designed for vehicular impact as it says in the specification.
