SECTION 02220

DEMOLITION

PART 1 – GENERAL

1.1 SCOPE: The work covered by this section is to remove wooden toilet buildings and their concrete vaults from National Forest property. Disposal shall meet all State and local laws and regulations. The excavated pit, where not used for locating the new toilet building, shall be backfilled with clean, imported, common fill material.

PART 2 – PRODUCTS (Not used)

PART 3 – EXECUTION

3.1 DISINFECTION: Prior to removal of the building, the vault shall be pumped by a licensed septic tank pump operator, and the contents removed according to State and local laws and regulations. Two gallons of chlorine mixture (10:1 water to household bleach) shall be sprayed into the vault using a pressure sprayer. Care shall be taken to direct the spray to coat the walls of the vault with the mixture.
3.2 WOODEN BUILDING: The wooden portion of the building and all appurtenances shall be entirely removed from National Forest land. Salvage or disposal shall meet all state and local laws and regulations.
3.3 CONCRETE VAULT: The concrete vault and floor slab shall be completely excavated and removed entirely from National Forest land. Disposal shall meet all state and local laws and regulations.
4.4 BACKFILL: The resulting pit shall be completely filled in. Rocks may be used provided they are tamped in with the loading equipment and do not protrude above the finish grade. Borrow material may be taken from excavation associated with other sections of these specifications. Borrow may be taken in thin layers from the surface within 150 feet of the building as approved and staked by the COR. Finish grade shall crown six inches above the surrounding grade. All disturbed areas, both fill and borrow, shall be raked smooth.

SECTION 02315

EXCAVATION, BACKFILL AND GRADING

PART 1 – GENERAL

1.1 SCOPE: The work covered by this section is to prepare the site for the delivery of CXT concrete toilet buildings. Delivery and placement of the buildings will be handled by a separate contractor.

PART 2 – PRODUCTS

2.1BASE ROCK: Base rock shall be a commercially available ¾” minus road base
2.2SAND: Leveling course shall be a commercially available sand material passing a 3/8” sieve.
2.3FENCING: Safety fencing shall be made from a high density polyethylene material, high visibility color, minimum 4 feet in height. Posts shall be standard steel T-bar fence posts with steel spade base.

PART 3 – EXECUTION

3.1EXCAVATION
A.Location of the building will be as staked in the field by the COR. The model of building is designated on the tables included on the plan sheets. The building model will dictate the dimensions of the excavation as follows:
1.“Gunnison” model: depth 4’6”, width 6’6”, length 14’8”.
2.“Tioga” models: depth 4’6”, width 13’ 0”, length 11’11”.
B.Depths indicated are the over excavation required to accommodate base rock and sand leveling course. Depth shall be measured from the highest point on the rim of the pit. Widths indicated are the actual outside dimensions of the vaults to be installed. Additional clearance shall be provided to allow for maneuvering of the vault placement, operation of compaction equipment in the space between the vault and the pit wall, possible sloughing of excavated walls, and for any deviation in the squareness of the walls.
C.Material removed from the pit shall be placed to one side only and in a manner that allows a crane access to one side of the pit and the delivery truck access to another side. No stockpile will be allowed closer than 3 feet to pit.
D.SAFETY FENCING
1.Each open pit shall be fenced for the protection of the public. The fencing shall be in place by the end of each day’s work until the delivery of the building. If placement of backfill has not filled the pit after installation of the building, fencing shall be erected by the end of the day’s work until backfill is brought up to surrounding grade.
2.Fencing shall be securely fastened to steel posts spaced at a maximum of 10 feet. Posts shall be driven to their full depth of the attached spade.
3.All fencing shall be removed by the completion of the project and shall remain the property of the Contrator.
3.2BACKFILL
A.Any native material on the bottom of the pit disturbed by the excavation (such as voids left from removed rocks) shall be replaced and compacted by a minimum of three passes with a whacker type mechanical compactor (whacker). The entire base of the pit shall be further compacted by a minimum of three passes with a whacker.
B.Base rock shall be placed to achieve a depth of three inches after compaction by three passes with a whacker.
C.A sand leveling course shall be placed and raked smooth to a depth of one inch. Sand shall be added to one side, as staked by the COR, to provide ¼” per foot slope.
D.After placement of the vault(s) and building, backfill of the space between the vault(s) and the pit wall shall proceed in eight inch lifts. Each lift shall be compacted by two passes with a whacker. Backfill material shall be free of rocks larger than six inches.
3.3GRADING
A.The remainder of the excavated stockpile shall be uniformly spread around the building. The height of the fill shall be at the level of the finished floor (except as noted in D below), and sloped away for drainage.
B.Unusable rocks shall be cast on the back side of the building.
C.The front of the building shall have a slope no steeper than 1:12, and shall be compacted by three passes with a whacker. The front of the building is defined as
1.Gunnison: the five foot wide portion of the building between the privacy screen and the toilet room.
2.Tiogas: the 17 foot wide portion of the building between the hinge side of each door.
D.The front of the building shall have a three inch lift of base rock extending ten feet from the edge of the concrete. The base rock shall be compacted by three passes with a whacker. The finished elevation of the base rock shall be one inch higher than the finished floor elevation. This will result in a compacted rock walkway with the following dimensions:
1.Gunnison: 5 feet x 10 feet.
2.Tiogas: 17 feet x 10 feet.
E.An excessive stockpile may, at the discretion of the COR, be disposed in thin layers within 150 feet of the building, as staked by the COR.
F.Final disposition of all stockpile and backfill not compacted shall be raked smooth.
