JOINT SEALANTS SPECIFICATION 07920
PART 1- GENERAL
A. DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
1. Sealant Work for the Project: Consists of resealing all penetrations through the exterior walls of the building including the Scale House (Add Alternate A), Pilot Plant (Add Alternate B), and Grain Elevator (Headhouse) (Add Alternate C) . Remove existing sealant, clean surfaces to receive sealant of all contaminants and reseal with specified type sealants. Reseal around all window frames, blowout panels, door frames, including overhead doors, louvers, penetrations around duct work, piping, conduit, control joints, expansion joints, etc.
2. The buildings are to be powerwashed and repainted on the exterior including all metal equipment doors, windows, louvers, etc. The sealant work shall be accomplished prior to application of painting in order to prevent contaminating the surfaces to receive sealant.
B. QUALITY ASSURANCE:
1. General Performance: Except as otherwise indicated, joint sealers are required to establish and maintain airtight and waterproof continuous seals on a permanent basis, within recognized limitations of wear and aging as indicated for each application.
Failures of installed sealers to comply with this requirement will be recognized as failures of materials and workmanship.
2. Installer Qualifications: The Installer shall be a firm regularly doing business as a sealant applicator and who has successfully completed, within the last three years, at least three joint sealer applications similar in type and size to that of this project.
C. SUBMITTALS:
1. Product Data: Submit product data from manufacturers for each joint sealer product required, including instructions for joint preparation and joint sealer application.
2. Samples for Initial Selection Purposes: Manufacturer’s standard bead samples consisting of strips of actual products showing full range of colors available for each product exposed to view.
3. Certificates from manufacturers of joint sealers attesting that their products comply with specification requirements and are suitable for the use indicated.
D. DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING:
1. Deliver materials to project site in original unopened containers or bundles with labels informing about manufacturer, product name and designation, color, expiration period for use, pot life, curing, time, etc.
2. Store and handle materials in compliance with manufacturers’ recommendations to prevent their deterioration or damage due to moisture, high or low temperatures, contaminants or other causes.
E. PROJECT CONDITIONS:
1. Environmental Conditions: Do not proceed with installation of joint sealers when ambient and substrate temperature conditions are outside the limits permitted by joint sealer manufacturers.
2. Joint Substrate Conditions: Do not proceed with installation of joint sealers until contaminants capable of interfering with their adhesion are removed from joint substrates.
PART 2- PRODUCTS
A. MATERIALS:
1. Compatibility: Provide joint sealers, primers, joint fillers, and other related materials that are compatible with one another and with joint substrates under conditions of service and application, as demonstrated by sealant manufacturer based on testing and field experience.
2. Joint Substrate Conditions: Provide color of exposed joint sealers indicated or, if not otherwise indicated, as selected by the COR from manufacturer’s standard colors.
B. ELASTOMERIC JOINT SEALANTS:
1. Elastomeric Sealant Standard: Provide manufacturer’s standard moisture curing, one-time urethane sealant of base polymer indicated which complies with U.S. Fed. Spec. TT- S-00230C, Type II, Class A and ASTM C-920-79 Type S, Grade NS, Class 25.
2. One-Part Nonsag Urethane Sealant or equal:
Vulkem 116; Mameco International, Inc.
Vulkem921; Mameco International Inc.
Dynatrol I; Pecora Corp.
Sikaflex-1a; Sika Corp.
Sikaflex-15LM; Sika Corp.
Sonolastic NP 1; Sonneborn Building Products Div., Rexnord Chem. Products Inc.
Dymonic; Tremeo Inc.
3. Joint Primer/Sealer: Provide type of joint primer/sealer recommended by Sealant Manufacturer for joint surfaces to be primed or sealed.
4. Bond Breaker Tape: Provide polyethylene tape or other plastic tape as recommended by Sealant Manufacturer, to be applied to sealant-contact surfaces where bond to substrate or joint fill must be avoided for proper performance of sealant. Provide self-adhesive tape where applicable.
5. Sealant Backer Rod: Provide compressible rod stock of polyethylene foam, polyurethane foam, polyethylene jacketed foam, butyl rubber foam, neoprene foam or other flexible, permanent, durable non-absorbent material as recommended by Sealant Manufacturer for back-up of and compatibility with sealant.
PART 3- EXECUTION
A. INSPECTION:
Installer must examine substrates, (joint surfaces) and conditions under which joint sealer work is to be performed, and must notify COR in writing of unsatisfactory conditions. Do not proceed with joint sealer work until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected in a manner acceptable to Applicator.
B. JOINT PREPARATION:
1. Existing sealant shall be removed from all joints. Remove or clean joints of oil, grease and other foreign matter. Wire brush or sandblast the joints as required to provide proper surface for bonding. Blow accumulated dust and debris from the joints immediately prior to application of the sealant. Clean surfaces with an approved cleaner and prime surfaces if recommended by the sealant manufacturer. Make certain all surfaces are clean, dry and properly prepared prior to application of sealant.
2. Install joint sealers at exterior surfaces before any application of paint.
C. INSTALLATION:
1. Comply with manufacturer’s printed instructions except where more stringent requirements are shown or specified, and except where manufacturer’s technical representative directs otherwise.
2. Set joint filler units at depth or position in joit to coordinate with other work, including installation of bond breakers, backer rods and sealants. Do not leave voids or gaps between ends of joint filler units.
3. Install sealant back rod for liquid-applied sealants where required to control depth of sealant.
4. Install bond breaker tape where required by manufacturer’s recommendations to ensure that liquid-applied sealants will perform as intended.
5. Employ only proven installation techniques which will ensure that sealants are deposited in uniform, continuous ribbons without gaps or air pockets, with complete “wetting” of joint bond surfaces equally on opposite sides.
6. Install liquid-applied sealant to depths as recommended by Sealant Manufacturer but within the following general limitations, measured as center (thin) section of bead (not applicable to sealants in lapped joints):
For normal moving joints sealant with elastomeric sealants but not subject to traffic, fill joints to a depth equal to 50% of joint width, but neither more than ½” deep or less than ¼” deep.
7. Spillage: Do not allow sealants to overflow from confines of joints, to spill onto adjoining work, or to migrate into voids of exposed finishes. Clean adjoining surfaces by whatever means may be necessary to eliminate evidence of spillage.
D. CURE AND PROTECTION:
Cure sealants in compliance with manufacturer’s instructions and recommendations to obtain high early bond strength, internal cohesive strength and surface durability. Cure and protect sealants in a manner which will minimize increases in modulus of elasticity and other accelerated aging effects. Replace or restore sealants which are damaged or deteriorated during construction period.
