1. Provide sealant backings of material and type which are non-staining; are compatible with joint substrates, sealants, primers and other joint fillers; and are approved for applications indicated by sealant manufacturer based on field experience and laboratory testing.

2. Plastic Foam Joint Fillers: Preformed, compressible, resilient, nonwaxing, nonextruding strips of flexible, nongassing plastic foam of material indicated below; nonabsorbent to water and gas; and of size, shape and density to control sealant depth and otherwise contribute to producing optimum sealant performance.

a. Either open-cell polyurethane foam or closed-cell polyethylene foam, unless otherwise indicated, subject to approval of sealant manufacturer, for cold-applied sealants only.

3. Bond-Breaker Tape: Polyethylene tape or other plastic tape as recommended by sealant manufacturer for preventing sealant from adhering to rigid, inflexible joint filler materials or joint surfaces at back of joint where such adhesion would result in sealant failure. Provide self-adhesive tape where applicable.

d. Miscellaneous Materials:

1. Primers: Provide type of primer recommended by joint sealer manufacturer where required for adhesion of sealant to joint substrates indicated, as determined from pre-construction joint sealer-substrate tests and field test.

2. Cleaners: Provide non-staining, chemical cleaners of type which are acceptable to manufacturers of sealants and sealant backing materials, which are not harmful to substrates and adjacent nonporous materials, and which do not leave oily residues or otherwise have a detrimental effect on sealant adhesion or in-service performance.

3. Masking Tape: Provide non-staining, nonabsorbent type masking tape compatible with joint sealants and surfaces adjacent to joints.

7. Execution:

Examine joints indicated to receive joint sealers, with installer present for compliance with requirements for joint configuration, installation, tolerances and other conditions affecting joint sealer performance. Do not proceed with installation of joint sealers until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

a. Preparation:

0790-3

1. Clean out joints immediately before installing joint sealers to comply with recommendations of joint sealer manufacturers and the following requirements. This shall include removal of all old sealant.

a. Remove all foreign material from joint substrates which could interfere with application of proper quantity and adhesion of joint sealer, including dust, paints, old joint sealers, oil, grease, waterproofing, water repellent, water, surface dirt, and frost. It is not necessary to remove permanent, protective coatings tested and approved for sealant adhesion and compatibility by sealant manufacturer.

b. Clean concrete, masonry, unglazed surfaces of ceramic tile and similar porous joint substrate surfaces, by brushing, grinding, blast cleaning, mechanical abrading, or a combination of these methods to produce a clean, sound substrate capable of developing optimum bond with joint sealers. Remove loose particles remaining from above cleaning operations by vacuuming or blowing out joints with oil-free compressed air.

c. Remove laitance and release agents from concrete.

d. Clean metal, glass, porcelain enamel, glazed surfaces of ceramic tile; and other nonporous surfaces of ceramic tile; and other nonporous surfaces by chemical cleaners of other means which are not harmful to substrates or leave residues capable of interfering with adhesion of joint sealers.

2. Prime joint substrates where indicated or where recommended by joint sealer manufacturer based on preconstruction joint sealer-substrate tests or prior experience. Apply primer to comply with joint sealer manufacturer’s recommendations. Confine primers to areas of joint sealer bond. Do not allow spillage or migration onto adjoining surfaces.

3. Use masking tape where required to prevent contact of sealant with adjoining surfaces which otherwise would be permanently stained or damaged by such contact or by cleaning methods required to remove sealant smears. Remove tape immediately after tooling without disturbing joint seal.

b. Installation of Joint Sealers:

1. Comply with joint sealer manufacturer’s printed installation instructions applicable to products and applications indicated, except where more stringent requirements apply.

0790-4

2. Elastomeric Sealant Installation Standard shall comply with recommendations of ASTM C 962, for use of joint sealants as applicable to materials, applications and conditions indicated.

3. Installation of Sealant Backings: Install sealant backings to comply with the following requirements:

a. Install joint fillers of type indicated to provide support of sealants during application and a position required to produce the cross-sectional shapes and depths of installed sealants relative to joint widths which allow optimum sealant movement capability.

b. Do not leave gaps between ends of joint fillers.

c. Do not stretch, twist, puncture, or tear joint fillers.

d. Remove absorbent joint fillers which have become wet prior to sealant application and replace with dry material.

4. Install bond breaker tape between sealants and joint fillers, compression seals, or back of joints where adhesion of sealant to surfaces at back of joints would result in sealant failure.

5. Install sealants by proven techniques that result in sealants directly contacting and fully wetting joint substrates, completely filling recesses provided for each joint configuration, and providing uniform, cross-sectional shapes and depths relative to joint widths which allow optimum sealant movement capability.

6. Immediately after sealant application and prior to time skinning or curing begins, tool sealants to form smooth, uniform beads of configuration indicated, to eliminate air pockets, and to ensure contact and adhesion of sealant with sedes of joint. Remove excess sealants from surfaces adjacent to joint. Do not use tooling agents which discolor sealants or adjacent surfaces or are not approved by sealant manufacturer.

a. Provide concave joint configuration per Figure 6A in ASTM C 962, unless otherwise indicated.

c. Cleaning:

0790-5

1. Clean off excess sealants or sealant smears adjacent to joints as work progresses by methods and with cleaning material approved by manufacturers of joint sealers and of products in which joints occur. On masonry and other porous surfaces, immediately scrape off fresh sealant that has been smeared on masonry and rub clean with solvent as recommended by the sealant manufacturer.

d. Protection:

1. Protect joint sealers during and after curing period from contact with contaminating substances or from damage resulting from construction operations or other causes so that they are without deterioration or damage at time of substantial completion. If, despite such protection, damage or deterioration occurs, cut out and remove damaged or deteriorated joint sealers immediately and reseal joints with new materials to produce joint sealer installations with repaired areas indistinguishable from original work.

PAINTING

1. General:

a. The extent of required painting shall include fume hood rooftop exhaust units as well as other exhausters and equipment as shown on the drawings.

b. No exterior painting shall be performed when the wind is from a direction that will carry dust onto the painted surfaces. Scheduling of painting shall be coordinated with COR and the final decisions shall rest upon the COR for allowing painting on windy days

2. Products:

a. Prime Coat: Sherwin-Williams, “Galvite”, #B50W3, or equal

b. Top Coat: Sherwin-Williams, Industrial Enamel, B54 Series, or equal.

3. Execution:

a. Cleaning, Preparation, and Pretreatment:

1. Surfaces to be painted shall be clean and free from loose particles before applying the paint. Oil, Grease and other contaminants harmful to paint adhesion shall be removed with clean cloth and appropriate cleaning solvent followed by rinsing with clear water.

2. Metal: Unfinished surfaces that have not been shop coated shall be solvent cleaned to remove oil and grease and wire brush cleaned to remove rust or other foreign substances. Unfinished and prime coated metal shall be prepared and primed before painting.

4, Paint Application:

0990-1

a. General: Paint shall be applied by skilled painters, by roller or brush, following manufacturer’s printed instructions and using appropriate methods of application. Adjacent work and materials shall be protected by ample drop cloths or other suitable coverings. The meeting line between colors shall be straight and sharply defined, with no blending, running or gaps. All coats of paint shall be applied uniformly and be free from sags, wrinkles, runs, holiday, smears, dirt and not defaced by spattered paint. Paint drops and overspray shall be removed before dry. The hiding shall be complete and each coat shall be so applied as to produce a film of uniform thickness. Special attention shall be given to insure that edges, corners, and crevices receive a film thickness equivalent to that of adjacent painted surfaces.

b. Paint properties, storage, mixing, and thinning: At time of application , paint shall show not signs of deterioration. Paints of different manufacturers or different types shall not be mixed together. Where necessary to suit conditions of surface, and method of application, the packaged paint may be thinned in accordance with the manufacturer’s directions. The use of thinning for any reason shall not relieve the Contractor from obtaining complete hiding of preceding coat or substrates.

c. Atmosphere and ambient conditions: While painting is begin done, the temperature of the surface to be painted and of the atmosphere in contact with the surfaces shall be at a minimum of 45 degrees F and a maximum of 95 degrees F. Surfaces to be painted shall be protected from dirt and dust during painting and finishing. Do not apply paint in snow, rain, fog or mist, or when relative humidity exceeds 85%, or to damp or wet surfaces, unless otherwise permitted by paint manufacturer’s printed instructions
