Questions and Answers on the project.
Q: The solicitation states that where installation locations are marked if existing signage is there, it must be removed (for Forest Service disposal). Can these be cut off at ground level or do the signs need to be uprooted?
If they need to be uprooted, are there any concrete footings involved? And do you know how many signs need to be removed?
A: Concrete footings would be more the exception than the rule. Signs should come up fairly easily, but it is easier to cut posts off, it would be allowed it is a wood post and is cut flush with the ground. The signs most likely to be removed before installation of the new signs would be the site signs at campgrounds. There is not an accurate count.
Q: The pass sign substrates state "plastic". Are you looking for HDPE or something else?
A: HDPE.
Q: The MFE/MFL signs do not list a post length. Can you provide that?
A: MFE/MFL signs must follow the height and offset guidelines shown on Sheet 8 of the drawings.
Q: The proposal document identifies "mobilization" as a bid item. I'm guessing you're asking for the manufacturing price but thought I better clarify. Can you confirm?
A: Mobilization generally covers the costs to the Contractor to mobilize personnel and equipment necessary to perform the required work. In this case, it should include the costs associated to arrive at each installation site. Contractors often include bonding and miscellaneous costs in their mobilization.
Q: There are quite a few signs that are cedar substrate, What are the requirements for the cedar and how can the larger signs be one piece as required in the sign specification?
A: The requirements for the cedar are spelled out in the EM-7100 15 Forest Service Manual, which states " Cedar shall be grade marked Western Red Cedar(Thuja pilcata), clear heart or A-grade, vertical grain, kiln dried, nominal thickness of two inches, and in accordance with Grading Rules for West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau, current edition, including any supplements thereto, except that the moisture content shall not exceed 15 percent at the time of sign manufacture." The manufacturing specifications in the EM 7100-15 also contain instructions for fabricating signs from lumber boards as an alternative to one piece construction.
