Well spaced even aged conifer stand with the following characteristics:

· Primarily early seral shade intolerant species

· Primarily root rot resistant species

· Maintained in a vigorous condition with limited insect and disease concerns.

End Result- (specifics)

· Western Larch and White Pine dominating the stand composition

· 250 trees per acre remaining is well spaced.

· Slash depth a maximum of 18” in depth.

Tree Thinning

· The average spacing for leave trees is 24 x 24 ft.

· The spacing may be varied 50 % to select the best tree based on the prescription and characteristics of desirable trees.

· Healthy Western White Pine will be counted in the average spacing

Desirable Leave Tree Characteristics. Trees should have the following characteristics:

· Straight stem

· Small branch diameter

· Good coloration

· Well-formed crown

· Branches horizontal or slightly angled to bole

· Free or limited presence of insect/disease damage and/or symptoms; damage or symptom does not affect growth or survival

· Vigorous annual terminal growth (especially in last 1 to 3 years)

· Crown class of dominant or co-dominant

· Crown ratio is 40% or greater Undesirable Leave Tree Characteristics. Trees that should not be left as leave trees:

· Multiple tops

· Poor crown form

· Crook or sweep in bole

· Dead or broken tops

· Poor coloration

· Large branch diameter

· Presence of insects or disease

· Branches more than 45 degrees from horizontal

· Physical or mechanical damage

· Suppressed

· Poor annual growth

· Sucker limbs

Acceptable Stocking Densities

· Trees per acre: 250 minimum to 300 maximum

· DO NOT CUT ANY HEALTHY WHITE PINE – unless you are above the average spacing required. White Pine will count in your average spacing totals.

Species Preference

· Western larch, white pine, lodgepole pine, spruce, douglas-fir, grand fir and hemlock. Ignore the western red cedar.

· When available, western white pine and western larch will uniformly stock this stand

· ALL trees under 2 feet in height will be ignored.

Maximum tree diameter at DBH. to be cut

· Maximum tree to be thinned is 7 inches DBH

· Count larger trees in trees per acre (TPA) calculation Maximum stump height

· All stumps will be 6 inches or lower

HAND PILING REQUIREMENTS:

· Piles should be:

· No closer than 10 ft from leave trees

· Compact and free of dirt

· Not exceed 8 ft by 4 ft long

· Located in existing openings, when possible

· 1/3 part fines with some larger materials.

· Covered with paper furnished by the contractor

· A maximum size of 6 to 8 ft in diameter by 8 ft in height, containing limbs and boles less than 9 inches.

· Piles should not:

· Be designed in a teepee shape

· Be constructed within the channel of any stream, or on top of down logs, stumps or snags.
