End Results- specifics

Spacing

The average spacing for leave trees is 10 x 10 feet. The spacing between leave trees may range from 9 x 9 feet to 11 x 11 feet to facilitate the selection of the best trees based on the prescription and characteristics of desirable trees. On a 1/50 acre plot (16.7’) there will be 8-9 “IN” trees.

**Trees within 50’ from a designated road will be thinned to a spacing of 8 x 8 (plus or minus

10%). This zone will be determine by the contractor and measured from the edge of the road.

Desired Stocking Level**

The desired stocking level for all units is 436 trees per acre (TPA). Areas within 50’ of designated roads will have a higher TPA.

Species Preference: Listed in order of preferred retention

(1) Engelmann Spruce

(2) Lodgepole pine

(3) Subalpine fir

(4) Limber Pine

Tree species will not be a selection criterion where disease, poor form or animal damage is present in the more desirable species.

Diameter/ Height limits

Trees less than 24” tall will not be cut and will NOT be considered in spacing. LIVE trees 6.0”

DBH and greater will not be cut but are to be considered in the spacing.

Trees to ignored (Not Cut)

Aspen trees and snags will not be cut and not considered in the spacing or final stocking numbers.

Slash treatment

Lop and scatter

Slash height for all units will be a maximum of 18”.

Slash will be pulled back 50’ from the edge of the roadway in certain units as designated in the treatment unit chart and C.4.6.4 as measured by the contractor.

Boundary

The exterior boundaries of the treatment units will be delineated by either/or painted with orange or yellow vertical stripes or dots; one facing into the unit and two side indicators facing adjacent boundary trees; or flagging. The COR will identify which method was used to the contractor representative/ foreman prior to working in a unit.
