3. Statement of Work
Contaminant Testing of Canada Geese for Human Consumption in Wisconsin
A. Background
The USDA APHIS WS program is working with a number of communities in Wisconsin to manage wild Canada goose populations. When lethal control is chosen, geese are transported to State-licensed food processing plants where the geese are processed for human consumption.
The WDNR established the Guidelines for Contaminants Screening of Harvested Urban Geese in 2000. The Guidelines require tissue sampling and analysis of specific contaminants by a WDNR-certified laboratory that meets WDNR standards. Laboratory results are reported to the WDNR Wildlife Health Team for evaluation and inclusion into a database. The Wildlife Health Team, in consultation with Department of Health and Family Services, evaluate the results and make recommendations for meat consumption. After the local goose population is tested and judged to be safe for consumption, the processed meat is donated to local food shelves.
B. Work Requirement
Goose management activities generally occur in mid-June to early-July each year.
Approximately 150 goose samples are collected each year for contaminant analysis. USDA APHIS will deliver the goose meat samples to the selected laboratory. The WDNR-certified laboratory will be responsible for sample analysis preparation, sample analysis for the specified contaminants, sample waste disposal, and reporting of results.
The specific contaminant analyses with the minimum detection limits required for each sample are:
Mercury (0.10 ug/g or ppm)
Poly-chlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)( 0.10 ug/g or ppm)
Lead (0.01 ug/g or ppm)
If requested by APHIS WS staff, samples also need to be analyzed for:
Carbamate/Organophosphate Pesticides (such as 2,4-D)
Results should be reported to Charles Lovell, District Supervisor, USDA, APHIS, WS, 1201 Storbeck Drive, Waupun, WI 53963 and Sean Strom, Wildlife Toxicologist, Wisconsin DNR, P.O. Box 7921, Madison, WI 53707-7921.
