USPECIFICATION

612. FORESTED WETLAND TREE PLANTING

1. SCOPE

a. Ddescription: This work shall consist of digging and preparing planting holes, and of furnishing, transporting, temporary storage planting and establishment of trees.

b. RestrictionsU: Equipment shall be of a type, size, capacity or condition suited for obtaining first class work and expedition of the job. Limits of operation shall be restricted to areas designated by the Inspector.

2. MATERIALS

a. Trees shall conform to the standards adopted by the American Association of Nurserymen.

(1) Quality of Plant Material

a) Unless otherwise specified plants shall be high quality nursery grown representatives of their normal species and varieties. They shall have average or normal well developed branches, together with vigorous root systems. Plants shall be free from insects, diseases, sunscald, knots, stubs, or other objectionable disfigurements. Thin weak plants will not be accepted. Plants must show appearance of normal health and vigor in strict accordance with these specifications.

(2) Measurement for Size

a) All planting stock will be grown using a root pruning technique that develops a heavy fibrous root system in a pot that is at least a #U3 potU in size. Minimum seedling height is 3 feet; minimum root collar caliper is 1/2 inch. Seedlings must be of conservation grade or better. Seedlings will be maintained in a vigorous condition until planted.

(2) Inspection of Plant Material

a) Seedlings will be inspected by the NRCS Tree Planting Inspector (henceforth referred to as the Inspector) as soon as possible after delivery to the planting site.

Seedlings will be vigorous, moist but free of mold, free of defects, with well-developed root systems. Seedlings that do not conform to the description either at the planting site will be discarded and must be replaced by the Contractor. Seedlings will be handled by the container, set down carefully and never dropped.

b) Plantings will be inspected at the start of the operation and at intervals deemed necessary by the Inspector to insure proper technique. All plantations will receive an inspection within 10 days after completion of tree planting.

(3) Shipment

a) Each species or variety shall be handled and packed in the manner approved for that plant, having regard for the soil and climatic conditions at the time and place of digging and of delivery, and to the time that will be consumed while in transit of delivery. All precautions that are customary in good trade practice shall be taken to insure the arrival of the plants in good condition.

b) Planting stock will be ordered within three weeks after the contract has been signed.

3. SITE PREPARATION

a. Method 1U – Any site preparation will be the responsibility of the contractor. Rotary mowing is the only approved method of site preparation.

4. CONSTRUCTION

a. Planting Procedures

(1) Seedlings will be planted upright with no more that a 20% lean and at the same depth they grew in the nursery. A thin layer of soil will be spread over the planting media 1" above the root collar. Soil will be packed firmly around seedling roots to eliminate air pockets. Soil should be tamped sufficiently to insure that seedlings will not be windthrown or scoured out during flood flows. Any seedlings that do not meet these specifications at the time of final inspection must be replaced within 7 days of inspection.

5. MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT

For items of work, for which specific lump sum prices are established in the contract, the quantity of work will not be measured for payment. Payment for this item will be made at the contract lump sum price for the item and will constitute full compensation for completion of the work.

Compensation for any item of work described in the contract but not listed in the bid schedule will be included in the payment for the item of work to which it is made subsidiary.

Such items and the items to which they are made subsidiary are identified in Section 5.

6. UITEMS OF WORK AND CONSTRUCTION DETAILS

Items of work to be performed in conformance with this specification and construction details are:

a. UBid Item # 3 - Tree Planting

(1) This item consists of furnishing all labor, equipment, and materials for planting trees including site preparation.

(2) Seedlings will be planted in rows on about 30-foot by 30-foot spacings planted on the topographic contour (48 trees/ac.) A minimum of 5 of the 10 Tree species should be planted based on the species adaptability to the frequency and duration of flooding.

(3) Approximately equal numbers of the following tree species will be planted.

Seedlings seed source must be obtained within 200 miles of the planting site.

(4) A total of 59.4 ac. will be planted.

Acceptable Species

TREES

Carya illinoensis, Northern Pecan Quercus lyrata, Overcup Oak Quercus palustris, Pin Oak Quercus macrocarpa, Bur Oak Betula nigra, River Birch

Taxodium distichum, Bald Cypress Quercus bicolor, Swamp White Oak Quercus pagoda, Cherry Bark Oak Carya laciniosa, Shellbark Hickory (this tree can be 2ft tall instead of 3ft minimum) Diospyros virginiana, Persimmon

Suitable species may be substituted at the discretion of the contracting officer.

(5) The following will be furnished to the Contracting Officers Representative (COR) or the Inspector by the Contractor:

Copies of invoices of each shipment of seedlings certification that all seedlings conform to the standards of the American Association of Nuserymen.

The following will be furnished to the COR by the Inspector:

(6) certification that the equipment to be used is of the proper type, sizes, capacity and condition to do the work.

(7) An inspection certificate for each shipment of seedlings cross-referenced with the invoice for each shipment.

(8) Site Preparation, Section 3, Method 2 shall apply.

(9) Planted seedlings will not required fertilization or watering.

(10) In Section 5, Measurement and Payment,U shall apply. Payment will be lump sum.

b. Bid Item # 4 - Tree Underplanting

(1) This item consists of furnishing all labor, equipment, and materials for planting trees including site preparation.

(2) Seedlings will be planted to fill in spaces between existing trees. Trees can be planted as close as 20 feet apart to fill voids. A minimum of 28 trees per acre shall be planted. A minimum of 5 of the 10 Tree species should be planted based on the species adaptability to the frequency and duration of flooding.

(3) Approximately equal numbers of the following tree species will be planted.

Seedlings seed source must be obtained within 200 miles of the planting site.

(4) A total of 82.9 ac. will be planted.
