1) Plant materials:
· Minimum of 25,000 plugs or potted native grasses, sedges, and forbs.

Reusable containers will be returned to greenhouse/propagation facilities at the SO.
2) All planting sites will be on the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie. There are several planting locations. Up to 10,000 native plant plugs will be installed in seed production beds; the remaining amount of native plant plugs will be planted in specified restoration project areas on Midewin. Specific locations and amounts of native plugs to be planted at each location will be identified closer to planting date. The numbers at each location may change given results from plant production and purchasing, but will not be below the total of 25,000. If weather or other conditions make one or more of the selected sites unsuitable or inaccessible for planting, alternative sites will be selected; all locations will be within 6 miles by road of the Midewin Supervisor’s Office.
3) Contractor will pick up plant material at the horticultural facilities of the Midewin Supervisor’s Office (SO) on a daily basis for planting.
4) Plant materials/plugs to be installed will be in a delineated area, organized and delineated by planting location.
5) Midewin staff will be responsible for organizing and maintaining this plant material until picked up by the contractor. Plants not installed at the end of each contract day will be returned to the SO if they cannot be watered in the field or planted within 48 hours after being removed from the SO.
6) Some designated planting sites are not open to public vehicular traffic. Contractors will be provided with keys and placards to access these sites.
· Contractors will be able to drive vehicles to within 0.25 miles of all planting sites. Further access will be by utility vehicles or ATVs. Midewin staff will designate travel/access routes. No planting site will be further than 200 ft. from access by utility vehicles.
· All vehicles (on-road or off-road) must follow indicated travel routes. There are sensitive sites (native vegetation remnants, wetlands, cultural sites, established seed production plantings, etc.) in the vicinity of the planting sites. Should natural resource damage occur as a result of the actions of contractor outside of these marked routes, the contractor is responsible for satisfactorily repairing the resource damage.
7) Site Conditions:
· Sites to be planted will be a mixture of uplands and wetlands (saturated or flooded soils).
· The Midewin staff is responsible for selecting and marking all planting sites. Midewin staff will provide maps and site visits prior to planting so contractor can locate the planting areas.
· Planting at Seed Production Beds will consist of planting in beds treated by herbicide application and mowing. Mowed turf is present on either side of the beds.
· Areas for planting in Seed Production Beds will have been treated with herbicide by Midewin staff.
· For planting in designated restoration sites, size will range from 5,000 square feet up to 20 acres.
· Boundaries of restoration sites to be planted will be marked with clearly visible flagging.
· Where necessary, access routes will be marked with visible flagging and will be identified by Midewin staff prior to commencement of planting.
· There will be NO tilling or other soil preparation before planting.
8) Planting Specifications:
· When planting in specified restoration sites, plant plugs should be installed at a spacing of 18” to 30”, dispersed among existing vegetation.
· For planting in restoration sites: species should be planted in mixed plantings instead of one species planted together in an area.
· For planting in Seed Production Beds: native plant plugs will be installed in single-species beds. Location and spacing information for each species will be provided by Midewin staff (COR and/or Inspector); pre-constructed planting guides/grids will be provided to contractor by Midewin staff for use while planting.
· When picking up planting material, species will be organized by Midewin staff in single species for ease of counting and/or planting.
· Holes for individual plant installation may be dug using powered augers, when possible, using auger bits less than 4 inches in diameter.
· Holes will be sufficiently deep and wide to allow for refill of loose soil.
· Plants must be installed in the ground firmly and sufficiently so that they cannot be easily pulled from the ground (as checked by COR/inspector).
· All plants must be installed so that the top of the soil plug lies slightly below (approximately ½ inch) below the finished surface and surrounding (undisturbed) soil surface.
· Plants should be sufficiently watered at the time of installation or within 24 hours of installation.
· Plants may be watered from tanks on utility vehicles or ATVs.
· Midewin staff is responsible for all subsequent watering after the initial watering after planting.
· If soils are too saturated or flooded for use of augers, other tools (such as shovels and trowels) may be used through arrangement with COR (provided by Contractor).
· The contractor can mow or rake the dead turf prior to planting if desired.
9) Work Period
· Installation of plants plugs can begin Monday, May 18, 2015.
· All installation and watering should be completed by Friday, May 29, 2015, unless agreed upon by CO/COR.
· Plants can be picked up each morning at the Midewin Supervisor’s Office horticultural facilities area, Monday through Friday beginning at 7:30 am.
10) Proposals should be broken down into a quote for planting, indicated as a price per plant.
