Scope of Work to Fertilize Elk and Bison Prairie and South Bison Range, September 2 through September 12, 2008
Location of application sites:
• The Elk and Bison Prairie is located on the East side of the Trace (also KY-453) just north of the intersection of Highway 68 and the Trace on Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area (LBL).
• The South Bison Range is located on the West side of the Trace (also TN-49) just south of the KY/TN state line on Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area (LBL). This location is across the Trace from ‘The Homeplace 1850.’
• The Homeplace 1850 is located on the East side of the Trace.
Site Characteristics:
• The Elk and Bison Prairie facility consists of an area of approximately 700 acres enclosed by a fence.
This enclosure has one primary entrance which is used by the public for access through a coin-operated gate. A paved loop road lies within the facility. Elk, bison, and deer are allowed to freely roam the facility. The terrain consists of rolling hills with an equal mix of forest and pasture. Some areas of pasture contain widely spaced trees. Access trails and other surrounding gates around and throughout the facility allow suitable access to all fields. Visibility in these sections of well-grazed pastures should not be a problem.
• The South Bison Range facility consists of an area of approximately 200 acres enclosed by a fence. This enclosure is divided into a North Pasture and a South Pasture. Bison are allowed to freely roam the facility. The terrain consists of primarily flat fields, with some sloped areas with narrow forested areas flanking creek beds between fields. Access is available through several locked gates surrounding the facility. Visibility in these well-grazed pastures should not be a problem.
• The area to be fertilized at The Homeplace 1850 consists of a 16-acre pasture enclosed by a fence. This site is very close to The Trace across from the South Bison Range. Access will be along dirt roads that lead from the visitor’s parking lot to the back entrance of the historic section of The Homeplace 1850, eventually leading to a locked gate.
Requirements:
• Contractor will be responsible for supplying all fertilizer, materials, labor, and equipment needed to apply the specified fertilizer to the pastures of the Elk and Bison Prairie, South Bison Range, and The Homeplace 1850.
• Vehicles used to spread the fertilizer must have wide (or balloon) tires suitable for traversing the areas without causing rutting. Fertilizer can not be spread when soil is too wet to prevent rutting and excess compaction.
• When working in the Elk & Bison Prairie, all trucks loaded with fertilizer must use side entrances to avoid crushing the cattle guards at the main entry gate. Empty trucks may exit through any available gate.
• All vehicles working within these pastures must have been washed before entering the facilities to prevent spread of disease and weed species from off-site.
• The Elk and Bison Prairie must be fertilized before the South Bison Range unless the spreader vehicles are cleaned again before entering the Elk and Bison Prairie.
• The South Bison Range must be fertilized before The Homeplace 1850 unless the spreader vehicles are cleaned again before entering the South Bison Range.
• The total acreage of the areas to be fertilized is 285 acres.
• Note that rates shown are actual pounds of specified elements to apply per acre, not pounds of fertilizer.
