SRS Santee Experimental Forest Beaver Control/Monitoring
ATTACHMENT 02
STATEMENT OF WORK
SPECIFICATIONS/ DESCRIPTION
SRS SANTEE EXPERIMENTAL FOREST BEAVER CONTROL & MONITORING
Monthly requirement consist of inspections of the tributaries and streams within the US Forest Service Santee Experimental Forest, with a focus on maintaining uninterrupted and reliable stream flow in Watersheds 77, 79, 80 and in Turkey Creek (Watershed 78). This involves thorough investigation of these streams, over a distance of at least 300 meters upstream and downstream of specified control points, plus adjacent riparian areas.
The control points include the Watershed 77, 79 and 80 stream gauging stations, the Turkey Creek station (located where Turkey Creek flows under SC Hwy 41N; see attached map), and the point at which Turkey Creek flows under the Irishtown Rd bridge. If beaver activity in a control area is observed (during a monthly inspection or by on-site personnel), we expect the immediate initiation of actions to remove the animals and further inspections until the activity ceases.
The animals should be removed by ethical and humane methods, and all state and federal laws should be observed (it is understood that firearms or trapping methods may be used). Any materials used by the beavers for dam or lodge building must be removed to prevent obstruction of stream water flow within the control area.
DEPREDATION LICENSE
