8. Marking Guide
Boundary Layout and Boundary Marking – (Payment Units 1-13) Use provided maps, photos and GIS data to flag the boundaries of each Payment Unit with provided blue ribbon. The COR will inspect and approve the boundary location prior to any boundary painting. After flagging is approved by the COR paint the boundaries as described in the MATOC.
Boundary GPSing - Boundary GPSing will be done by a District employee, most likely the
COR.
Defect and Tally Tree Ribbon Information – As appropriate all Tally trees shall be flagged with blue and white striped ribbon with the following information recorded on the ribbon: Tree Number, DBH, Heights, Species, Defect, markers Initials. Defect will be cruised on Pine Saw timber by using the following attached Defect tables and Ouachita National Forest Cruising Specifications.
Modified Shelter wood (Units 11) – (Cut Tree mark Designation) This is a regeneration harvest. Leave trees should be selected that have good form, large crowns and signs of good cone production. The Shelter wood trees shall be marked with an orange band prior to marking the cut trees to be removed. You should leave about 22 trees per acre, which is a 45 foot spacing.
However spacing is not the most important factor. Leave all pine relic trees. Relic trees are old trees that have flat tops, droopy limbs, slick bark and usually red heart rot. Due to previous silvicultural treatments there is very little hardwood in this unit. DO NOT mark any hardwood pulp in this unit. DO NOT mark any hardwood saw timber. Other than the shelter wood trees all merchantable pine saw timber and pine pulp wood shall be marked and sampled.
Thin 60 BA pine HW 10 BA (Unit 2) (Cut Tree Mark Designation)- This is in Management Area 22 (Shortleaf Pine Bluestem Restoration). Thin pine saw timber and pulpwood to a basal area of about 60. A range of 55 to 65 is acceptable. Leave all pine relic trees. Relic trees are old trees that have flat tops, droopy limbs, slick bark and usually red heart rot. Thin the hardwood pulpwood so as to leave a 10 – 30% hardwood component. Do not mark any hardwood saw timber. Leave all den or cavity trees. (For example: if pine is thinned to a basal area of 60, a %17 hardwood component is about 10 basal area. This would combine for basal area of about 70 of pine and hardwood.) DO NOT mark any hardwood saw timber. Hardwood pulp wood will be counted under the 03 strata. Please note that when a hardwood pulp wood tree is tallied a species code of 800 will be used. Species code 800 is Mixed Oak Hardwood which is all the White oaks, Red oaks and hickory. Black gum, Sweet gum, and Red maples may be marked but there are very few of them. Do not mark any Cedar, Flowering dogwood, plums, ash species or cherry species. Due to previous mid-story removal work all hardwoods will be marked with an X blaze.
Defect is not required for hardwood pulpwood.
Thin 60 BA (Units 2-7, 9, 10, 12, and 13) (Cut Tree Mark Designation)- This is in Management Area 22 (Shortleaf Pine Bluestem Restoration). Thin pine saw timber and pulpwood to a basal area of about 60. A range of 55 to 65 is acceptable. Leave all pine relic trees. Relic trees are old trees that have flat tops, droopy limbs, slick bark and usually red heart rot. Due to past hardwood mid-story reduction treatments there is very little hardwood in these stands. DO NOT mark any hardwood saw timber or pulp wood.
Pole stand thinning to 18 – 20 ft spacing (Units 1 and 8) (LTM)-These are about 40 year old Shortleaf pine pole stands. Leave tree mark these stands so that they will have an average spacing of 18 to 20 foot spacing between the pine which is about 60 BA. All pine trees 15.0 inches in diameter at 4.5 feet above the ground and larger shall be marked as leave trees. Volume will be determined by using the PCM with frequency. Once Units have been GPSed, plot locations will be loaded onto a GPS unit for locating plots on the ground (75 plot minimum in Strata 4). Use a wooden stake to monument each plot center. Write the plot number on the stake and tie some red flagging on each stake. At null plots tie some ribbon in surrounding vegetation to assist in locating the plot. Use a 10 BAF prism to determine in and out trees on each plot.
Borderline trees shall be checked using the provided limiting distance table. Flag the “in” pulpwood trees with red ribbon and the “in” saw timber trees with blue ribbon. Measure trees will be flagged with blue and white striped ribbon with recorded measurement data as described above. Use the Walk Through Method on edge plots as shown on page 9.
ROW (Unit 21) Mark trees that need to be removed for specified road work. This Unit will be marked by the District Marking Crew.

Walk Through
The 'Walk Through' method is a simple effective way to handle the effect of the unit boundary on plots near the boundary.
For each tree 'in' the plot, measure the distance from plot center to the face of the tree.
'Walk Through' the tree and measure an equal distance along a line from the tree away from the plot center.
If the end of the line lands outside the unit boundary, count the tree twice. Otherwise count the tree once.
Each plot must be monumented so it can be found at a later date.
Tie flagging in nearby trees or bushes to make the general area of the plot center visible from a distance.
Mark the exact plot center with a wooden stake and flagging. Use something durable. It may be a year or more later when someone says, "We need to go find those plots".
At a minimum, record the plot number and cruiser initials on the stake at the plot center.
Any measured trees will also be flagged and that will help locate the plots at a later date.
