ARRA Road Maintenance – Small Culvert Replacement Special Project Specifications Location

Daniel Boone National Forest, Kentucky

CUMBERLAND RANGER DISTRICT:

Forest Roads 9, 9A, and 9B

LONDON RANGER DISTRICT:

Forest Road 121 Forest Road 345

STEARNS RANGER DISTRICT:

Forest Road 137 Forest Road 139 Forest Road 564

REDBIRD RANGER DISTRICT:

Forest Road 1501 Forest Road 1533 Forest Road 1604 Project Scope

The project consists of the replacement of numerous culvert pipes across the Daniel Boone National Forest. Work includes removing existing deficient culverts and hauling away off forest, furnish and replace with Metallic-Coated Corrugated Steel pipe, 16 gauge thickness, with proper bedding, backfill, compaction, roadway surface aggregate replacement at the pipe location and associated seeding. Average depth of fill over the pipe is 2 feet.

Material

Bedding Material:

Furnish a well-graded, compactable material free of excess moisture, muck, frozen lumps, roots, sod, or other deleterious material with a maximum particle size of ½ inch and meeting AASHTO M 145 A-3. Bedding for the existing pipe to be removed can be used if it meets the criteria.

Backfill Material:

Furnish a well-graded, compactable material free of excess moisture, muck, frozen lumps, roots, sod, or other deleterious material with a maximum particle size of ½ inch and meeting the Aggregate Specification KY Gradation #8. Existing backfill from removing the existing pipe can be used if it meets the criteria.

Metallic-Coated Corrugated Steel Pipe:

Furnish pipe and coupling bands conforming to AASHTO M 36 and either AASHTO M 218, M 274, or M 289 for the dimensions specified. Pipe thickness shall be .064 inches (16 gauge).

Seed Mix: Seed mixture shall consist of the following:

Wheat, cereal rye or oats, plus orchard grass. The cereal grains should be put down at 30 lbs/acre and the orchard grass at 20 lbs/acre. NO fertilizer and no more than a ton of lime per acre.

Roadway Surfacing:

Furnish a dense graded aggregate (DGA), compactable material free of excess moisture, muck, frozen lumps, roots, sod, or other deleterious material and meeting the Aggregate Specification KY Gradation DGA.

Execution

1. Excavation and Backfill. This work consists of excavating material for the construction of all drainage structures. The work includes excavating, bedding, and backfilling.

Excavation:

The width of the trenches in natural ground shall permit satisfactory joining and thorough tamping of the bedding material under and around the culvert, and shall be as wide as the culvert diameter plus 2 feet. Excavate to foundation grade without duly disturbing the trench or foundation surface. Foundation grade is the elevation at the bottom of the bedding. When excavation is complete, request COR approval as to the character and suitability of the foundation material. The foundation shall provide a firm foundation of uniform density throughout its length and width.

Bedding:

Verify that the foundation is smooth. Place un-compacted bedding material over the foundation in a layer of uniform thickness. For 18” – 24” pipe, the bedding thickness is 3 inches. Place the culvert on the un-compacted bedding layer.

Backfill:

Place backfill in horizontal layers that when compacted do not exceed 6 inches in depth. Compact each layer to at least 95 percent of the maximum density. Bring backfill up evenly on all sides of the structure, and extend each layer to the limits of the excavation or to natural ground, except for in the actual roadway surface area, which should be within 6 inches of the top. The 6 inches at the top of the excavation in the roadway should be backfilled with DGA and compacted. Compact each layer, full width, until there is no visible evidence of further consolidation.

2. Culverts General:

Furnish corrugated metal culvert pipe with a wall thickness not less than .064 inches, 16 gauge. Use the same material and coating on all contiguous pipe sections. For culvert extensions, furnish the same material as the existing culvert.

Laying Metal Pipe:

Lay pipe with outside laps of circumferential joints upgrade and longitudinal laps positioned other than in the invert. Place elongated pipes with major axis within 5 degrees of vertical. Join pipe sections together with soil tight bell and spigot joints or coupling bands according to AASHTO M 36 or M 196. Limit the use of bell and spigot joints to slopes of 10 percent or less. Limit the use of coupling bands with projections (dimples) to attaching prefabricated flared end sections.

When aluminum alloys come in contact with other metals, coat the contacting surfaces with asphalt mastic or a preapproved impregnated caulking compound.

3. Seeding and Mulching Do not seed during windy weather or when the ground is excessively wet, frozen, or otherwise not tillable. Spread a mixture of wheat, cereal rye or oats, plus orchard grass. The cereal grains should be put down at 30 lbs/acre and the orchard grass at 20 lbs/acre. NO fertilizer and no more than a ton of lime per acre. Apply straw mulch by hand at a rate of 50 lbs/100 SY.

4. Removal of Material Excavate and remove the existing culvert in its entirety. Recycle or dispose of excess material and used culverts legally off the Forest.
