3. Store stone on pallets, off of ground.

4. Do not mix stones from different walks.

D. Joint Raking:

1. Remove existing mortar to a minimum depth of (2) times the width of the joint back from the finished face of the mortar joint.

2. If using saws or grinders, make only one pass through center of each joint. Rake out remainder of mortar in joints by hand chisel and mallet. Do not chip, cur, or spall face of stone, or widen joints.

3. Remove mortar from masonry surfaces within raked-out joints to provide reveals with square backs and to expose masonry for contract with pointing mortar.

4. Remove loose materials with a brush and air pressure.

5. Joint raking operations resulting in damage to masonry will cease immediately until tools, workmen, and methodology can be reviewed and corrective measures taken to acceptance of Contracting

Officer. Masonry damaged as a result of joint raking procedures will be repaired or replaced at no additional cost to Government.

3.02 INSTALLATION

A. Measuring and Mixing Mortar:

1. Measure the proportions and mix the mortar in accordance with ASTM C 270, unless otherwise directed. Use automatic measuring devices that will consistently maintain the specified proportion within a 5 percentage (plus or minus) tolerance.

2. Mix mortar in a mechanically operated drum-type batch mixer in which water can be accurately and uniformly controlled.

3. Mix all dry ingredients for at least two minutes, then add water and mix for at least three additional minutes. Do not exceed, in volume of mixed material, the manufacturer's rated capacity of mixer.

Empty the mixer completely after each batch. Keep mixer and all other equipment clean.

4. Using Mortar: Use mortar as soon as practicable after mixing. At air temperatures of 80º F and higher, use mortar within 2-1/2 hours of introduction of water to the mix. At lower temperatures, this time may be increased to 3-1/2 hours. Discard all mortar not used within these time limits. As an option to the above, if the initial set time of cements used are determined according to ASTM C

266, the time limit for use of mortar will be determined as follows: Initial set of cement minus one

(1) hour if air temperature is 80º F or higher, or initial set of cement minus one quarter (1/4) hour if air temperature is less than 80º F. Determine time limit for use of mortar from the cement with the shortest initial set time.

B. Pointing:

1. Wet joints thoroughly before pointing, allowing water to soak into surface to prevent free-standing water.

2. Fill joints solidly with pointing mortar. Mortar shall be placed into joints in approximately 1/4” layers and tightly compressed. When each layer is “thumbprint” hard, another 1/4” layer shall be placed into joint.

3. Exercise care to fully fill joints to proper depth, and finally tool joints at appropriate time to avoid tool burn or slicking. Tool and texture joints to match original appearance of joints. Remove excess mortar from edge of joint by brushing.

4. On hot, dry days pointing operations will be done in shade only.

5. Cure mortar by maintaining a damp condition for 72 hours. Hairline cracking within mortar or separation at edge of joint will be unacceptable. Work determined to be unacceptable will be replaced and re-inspected.

C. Masonry Rebuilding:

1. Masonry to be reconstructed as determined by Contracting Officer.

2. Masonry shall be saturated and surface damp, but not dripping when set.

3. Set stone in place on freshly placed mortar. Tooth all new work into existing, setting stones flush with adjacent stones.

3.03 Curing, Protecting, and Cleaning
