Minor deviations of ± 12 inches in vertical alignment and 4 feet in horizontal alignment with smooth transitions of at least 10 feet on each side of the deviation are acceptable unless otherwise SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS.

Construct embankments with compacted soil. Compact all disturbed soil within the trailbed area. This shall be done by mechanical vibratory compactor over the full area until a firm surface is accomplished. Soil shall have adequate moisture to ensure proper compaction is made.

Add the following:

Rock Removal - Remove surface rocks that are larger than 20 inches at their greatest dimension, and rocks that project more than 20 inches above the trail tread. Shatter any protruding rocks or rock surface in trail tread that are too large to be pried out. Remove the protrusion down to the level of the tread surface. No explosives shall be used.

912.05 Trailbed Finish

Add the following:

Trail bed shall be full bench cut construction AS SHOWN ON THE DRAWING over the entire length of the project.

Trail bed shall be constructed having either a grade dip or rolling dip AS SHOWN ON THE DRAWING at a minimum of every 50 feet or as necessary to allow the trail to have adequate surface drainage. These should be incorporated in the tread construction to maximized existing topographic features. The contractor is to locate and construct these as needed. All drainage dips are considered incidental to excavation.

Shallow stream ford crossings will be constructed by using native rocks as SHOWN ON THE DRAWING. Material for the crossings is available on site within 100 feet of actual location.

912.08 Geosynthetics

Delete and add the following:

The trail bed shall be excavated 8 inches deep the width of the trail tread where DESIGNATED ON THE GROUND, place geosynthetics flat and parallel to the centerline of the trail before placing aggregate AS SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS. Install anchors or fasteners as recommended by the geosynthetic manufacture.

This work consists of furnishing, hauling, placing, and compacting aggregate surfacing or base course and geosynthetics.

Haul of aggregates is in many locations difficult. In most locations hauling on the trail is required and in many instances distances average 1/2 to 1 mile from stockpile site on roadway. Hauling with over-road equipment on the trail is not allowed. Equipment is to be kept on the maintained tread. Stockpiled aggregate shall be DESIGNATED ON THE GROUND and SHOWN ON THE MAPS. Aggregate stockpile site shall be placed in such a way as not to endanger the traffic on a road or trail, plug drainages or damage the facilities or fauna of the Forest.

941.05 Preparation of Sub grade

Add the following:

Geosynthetics shall be installed AS DESIGNATED ON THE GROUND.

941.06 Spreading and Compacting

Replace with the following:

Use Aggregate that is uniformly mixed at optimum moisture content and spread in layer to the final thickness and width SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS. The maximum thickness of any one layer shall be 4 inches. Obtain compaction by running the hauling equipment over the layer. Correct any irregularities or depressions that develop by adding or removing material until the surface is smooth, uniform and compacted.

Where DESIGNATED ON THE GROUND base course aggregate (3” clean) shall be placed 6 inches deep on geotextile fabric with an 8 inch layer of aggregate surfacing, separated by geotextile, covering the base course.
