Install erosion control measures prior to start of construction and maintain them until final completion of work. Unless otherwise instructed, remove temporary erosion control measures prior to final application for payment.

Strive to limit stripping of sod and vegetation to a period that will expose bare soil to the least possibility of erosion that construction requirements will allow.

Construct and maintain dams, channels, flumes, sumps, and other temporary diversion and protective works to divert stream flow and other surface water through or around construction site and away from work while construction is in progress. Unless otherwise specified, a diversion must discharge into the same natural drainage way in which its head waters are located.

Prevent tracking of soils and sediments onto public roads by constructing graveled access road and parking area as needed at the construction site in coordination with Forest Service and as shown on plans. Remove at the end of each work day soils and sediment reaching public roads not part of the construction site.

Silt Fence Installation and Maintenance

Install silt fence at locations and in manner as required to prevent erosion of construction area soils to adjacent waterway areas.

When possible, construct silt fence in an arc or horseshoe shape with its ends pointed up slope. Attach fabric to posts with wire staples or wooden lath and nails. Adequately bury bottom of fabric in a 6 in. trench cut into ground so as to prevent sediment from escaping under fence.

Inspect silt fences immediately after each rainfall and at least daily during prolonged rainfall.

Remove and dispose of sediment deposits when deposit reaches approximately one-half the volume capacity of silt fence.

Remove silt fences after slopes and ditches have been stabilized and turf developed to extent that future erosion is unlikely.

PART 3 EXECUTION

Preparation

Prepare site for work in accordance with Section 02010. Layout and stake lines and grades as required to complete the work.

Excavation

Excavate to achieve necessary dimensions, lines, grades, and side slopes as shown on the plans. Conform to elevations and dimensions shown within a tolerance of plus or minus 0.10 ft.

For footings and foundations, take care not to disturb bottom of excavation. Excavate to final grade just before concrete is placed. Trim bottoms to required lines and grades to leave solid, undisturbed base to receive granular fill, base course, or concrete as shown.

All topsoil within the construction limits shall be removed and stockpiled separately for use as topsoil backfill material.

Trenching

Excavate trench so that pipe can be laid safely and accurately to required line and grade. Hand excavate for bells, fittings and projections to allow for proper jointing and to insure that pipe rests evenly along barrel and is not resting on bell.

In drainage rock, bottom of trench shall be 6 in. below pipe barrel. Provide Granular Bedding as specified below.

Unauthorized Excavation

Unauthorized excavation consists of removal of materials beyond indicated elevations or side dimensions without specific direction of Contracting Officer. Unauthorized excavation, as well as remedial work, shall be at Contractor's expense. Notify Contracting Officer if unauthorized excavations are made.

Additional Excavation (Over Excavation)

When excavation has reached required sub grade elevation, notify Contracting Officer who will make an inspection of conditions. Inform Contracting Officer of unsuitable, unconsolidated sub grade soils.

If unsuitable bearing materials, such as poorly compacted fill, existing foundations, rubble, debris, or organic deposits, are encountered at required sub grade elevations, carry excavations deeper and replace excavated material with properly compacted Fill as directed by Contracting Officer.

Removal of unsuitable material is a requirement of this contract

Stability of Excavations

Maintain sides and slopes of excavations in a safe condition until completion of backfilling. Slope sides of excavations to angle of repose of material excavated; otherwise, shore and brace where sloping is not possible either because of space restrictions or stability of material excavated.

3.7 Dewatering

Perform earthwork in a manner to prevent surface water and ground water from flowing into excavations. Promptly remove water from excavations using pumps and dewatering system necessary to convey water away from excavations.

3.8 Examination of Sub grade

A.

Examine sub grade prior to placement of fill or backfill. Do not place materials on frozen sub grade. Plow, strip, or break-up sloped surfaces steeper than 1 vertical to 4 horizontal so that material will bond with sub grade. When sub grade has a density less than that specified for the particular area, breakup ground surface, pulverize moisture-condition to optimum content, and compact top 12 in. to density specified for new backfill.

3.9 Filling and Backfilling, General

Do not place fill or backfill until required excavation and sub grade preparation have been inspected and approved by Contracting Officer.

Place fill or backfill in approximately horizontal layers, compacted by tamping roller, do not exceed the maximum lift thickness of 6”. Spread piles and windrows uniformly.

Adjacent to structures, place fill or backfill to prevent damage and allow structures to assume loads gradually and uniformly, at approximately the same rate on all sides of structure.

Provide Backfill material to bring excavations to existing or designated grade.

Promptly backfill excavations as work permits.

3.12 Gravel Base Course

Provide gravel base course on roadway and parking lot as indicated on Drawings and as staked by Forest Service.

3.13 Trench Bedding and Backfill

Bedding, haunching, and initial backfill for rigid pipes shall be in accordance with ASTM C12, Class C or better. Bedding, haunching, and initial backfill for flexible pipes shall be in accordance with ASTM D2321, Class II or better.

Provide Granular bedding in trench from sub grade to a point supporting bottom 1/3 of pipe. Place bedding so that it fills and supports pipe haunch area.

Immediately after installation of pipe, provide tamped Granular Backfill up to a minimum depth of 4 inches below final grade to allow for topsoil. Take special care in placing and tamping initial backfill material so alignment and grade of pipe is not disturbed nor pipe damaged.

3.14 Grading

Grade area within project limits by cutting and/or filling as necessary to achieve lines and grades shown. Grade areas adjacent to structure lines to drain away from structure to prevent ponding. Finish surface to be reasonably smooth and free from irregular surface changes. Tolerance for areas to receive topsoil shall be 0.3 ft above or below established grade, less allowance for topsoil.

3.16 Compaction

A.

Place backfill and base material in maximum six-inch lifts and compact thoroughly with a flat-plate mechanical vibrator until visible deformation of the layer ceases. Add water as needed. (Minimum 3 passes).

Provide compaction equipment required to obtain desired compaction. Compaction by travel of grading equipment is not considered adequate for uniform compaction. Small vibratory compactors are required wherever fill is placed adjacent to foundation walls, footings, and piers. Pipe bedding and initial backfill shall be hand or mechanically tamped.

During placement and compaction, maintain moisture content of materials within optimum range.

3.17 Disposal of Excess and Waste Materials

Remove excess excavated material, trash, debris, and other waste materials and legally dispose of them off-site.
