SPECIAL PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS

SECTION 151 – MOBILIZATION

1. 151.01, is hereby modified by replacing the Description paragraph with the following paragraph:

This work consists of moving personal, equipment, material, and incidentals to the project, performing all work necessary before beginning work at the project sites, and all infrastructure upgrades to allow for access to the project sites. Mobilization includes the obtaining of permits, insurance, and bonds.

SECTION 157 – SOIL EROSION CONTROL

2. 157.06 Sediment Retention Structures, is hereby modified by adding the following paragraph:

(c) Filter bags. Construct filter bags and/or geotextile filter sediment retention devices in upland locations to filter sediment from water pumped from the work area. The placement locations shall be no less than 100 feet from the edge of any mapped waterway or body of water. The contractor shall submit the technical data of the proposed sediment retention devices to the Forest Service COR prior for approval prior to installation.

SECTION 203 – REMOVAL OF STRUCTURES AND OBSTRUCTIONS

3. 203.04 Removing Material, is hereby modified by adding the following paragraph:

Remove existing sluice gates and operators in such a manner as not to damage the existing structure to which it is affixed.

SECTION 204 – EXCAVATION AND EMBANKMENT

4. 204.02 Definitions, is hereby modified by adding the following paragraphs to 204.02 (b):

(6) Constructing earthen dam embankments.

(7) Placing toe drain filter material.

5. 204.03 Material, is hereby modified by adding the following subsections:

Embankment Material 704.13 Toe Drain Material 704.14

6. 204.10 Embankment Construction, is hereby modified by adding the following paragraphs:

(e) Embankment of an earthen dam. Water content shall be carefully controlled and the in-place water content shall be within 2% of the optimum moisture content.

Place fill in 9-inch thick loose layers. Around structures, material shall be placed in 4-inch thick loose layers with no stones larger than 2 inches.

Keep surface of embankment sloped and graded so that surface water flows off and does not pond during periods of rain. Where ruts or erosion occur, add additional fill, reshape, and recompact before placing next lift.

Drying and cracking of the surface shall be prevented.

Scarify with a harrow before placing next lift.

Compact the ground surface according to Subsection 204.11.

(f) Toe Drain Filter of an earthen dam. Construct toe drain trench to the neat lines and elevations indicated on the drawings.

Place filter layer in 9-inch (maximum) thick well wetted loose layers. The filter material shall be placed in continuous, approximately horizontal layers not more than 9 inches in loose thickness.

Successive loads of material shall be placed as to secure the best practical distribution of the material and minimize segregation. The material shall be placed and leveled in an approved manner prior to compaction. Around structures, material shall be placed in 4-inch thick loose layers with no stones larger than 2 inches.

Filter material shall be placed and compacted to and elevation one half the pipe diameter higher than the proposed invert of the pipe. Shape filter material to the configuration of the pipes then hand dig depressions just large enough to accommodate pipe joints.

Care should be taken so that all filter material does not become contaminated. Contaminated filter material shall be removed and replaced with suitable material at the contractor’s expense.

Compact the ground surface according to Subsection 204.11.

7. 204.11 Compaction, is hereby modified as follows:

(c) Less than 50 percent retained on a No. 4 Sieve. Classify the material according to AASHTO M 145. For material classified A-1 or A-2-4, determine the maximum density according to AASHTO T 180, method D. For embankment and toe drain filter material, determine the maximum density and optimum moisture according to AASHTO T 180, Method D.

Adjust the moisture content of all material to within 2 percent of the optimum moisture content.

Use compression-type or vibratory rollers except around structures where alternate acceptable mechanical tampers are to be used. Compact each layer of material full width to at least 95 percent of the maximum density. Determine the in-place density and moisture content according to AASHTO T 310 or other approved test procedures. When required, use AASHTO T 224 to correct for coarse particles.

SECTION 605 – REMOVAL OF STRUCTURES AND OBSTRUCTIONS

8. 605.04 Placing Underdrain, is hereby modified by adding the following paragraph:

(c) Toe Drain Collector Pipe. When toe drain collector pipe is placed, toe drain filter material shall be placed a minimum of 6 inches around the pipe.

Four-inch diameter machine-slotted PVC toe drain collector pipe shall conform to ASTM F949 requirements with a minimum cell classification of 12454B as defined by ASTM D1784 with a pipe stiffness of 50 psi or greater. Elastomeric gaskets to conform to requirements of ASTM D3212.

Perforations shall be 0.10 inches in width by 1 1/16 inch in length, machine slotted, conforming to requirements of ASTM F949. Laying lengths shall be a minimum of 20 feet except for closures and special lengths.

Rubber sealing ring allowing expansion and contraction at each joint and supplied by the pipe manufacturer. Bell joint integral with the pipe shall be wall thickened so that standard dimension ratios are maintained or exceeded.

Place collector pipe with the perforations facing upward.

Prevent displacement of the collector pipe during compaction.
