Trail Maintenance Contract—9 Miles Location: The Sycamore Cove/Grassy Road Loop Trail and Thrift Cove/First Mile of the South End of Black Mountain Trail are located within about 10 miles of Brevard, NC, in Transylvania County.

Work to be performed: Maintenance is to be performed on the 9 miles of existing mountain biking trail to bring them up to current USDA Forest Service trail standards. Work will include, but may not be limited to, restoration of the trail tread, creating and restoring drainage dips, armoring stream crossings with stone, brushing vegetation along the trail to allow adequate clearance for bikers, and felling hazardous trees. All ground disturbing work activities are restricted to the current trail-way, approximately 8 feet wide. Rock and soil can be moved and utilized within this corridor, but not outside it. Native flat stone will be placed at specified water crossings—all of this stone will need to brought in from off-site and approved by the COR prior to placement. The contractor should verify needed materials prior to bid. All imported material is at contractor’s cost and should be included in bid.

General Notes Refer to Standard Specifications for Construction and Maintenance of Trails (EM-7720-103)

Sept. 1996 for additional information if needed or refer to:

http://fsweb.wo.fs.fed.us/rhwr/ibsc/index.shtml Contractors shall have a demonstrated record of competence in trail maintenance and be able to furnish evidence of past successfully executed mountain biking projects.

The maintenance work must include a minimum of 50 grade reversals (dips) per mile to ensure proper drainage off the entire length of the trail. Existing dips can be utilized if they produce adequate positive drainage off of the trail.

Contractor shall lay out and flag dip locations and structures except for those already laid out by the Forest Service. COR shall approve lay out prior ground disturbing work on the trail.

This is a Class 3 mountain biking trail and must meet the criteria specified in the design parameters unless otherwise specifically noted in the contract document. Refer to attached drawings as needed.

Vegetation clearing shall be a minimum of 8 ft. above the tread and 4 ft. on both sides of the centerline of the finished trail. Dead or hazardous trees within this clearing area shall be felled also—those over 16 inches in diameter within in 10 ft. of the centerline of the trail shall also be felled .

Dip lengths may be constructed shorter than the 20 ft minimum shown on the drawing when site location does not allow this length. Minimum length can be 12 ft or as approved by COR.

Contractors or their representative must review the project site on the ground before submitting a bid.

Native flat stone a minimum of 3” thick and ½ square ft. of face area shall be used to armor specified stream crossings. The stone shall be approved by the COR prior to placement.
