Attachment 1 – Photos

Top photo is a “before” treatment picture showing a dense, over-stocked stand (compartment 6029, stand 7) adjacent to a powerline right-of-way. This is typical of most stands that need treatment where thick pine occurs across ridge tops and mostly hardwood occurs on side slopes. The bottom photo is an “after” treatment picture showing improved stocking and spacing based on Gingrich stocking charts (Forest Plan, Figure 2-2, page 2-10). Thinning treatments improve growing conditions for individual, full-crowned trees whether it is a pine or a hardwood tree.

Top photo is a picture of a stand (Compartment 6065, stand 1) planted with shortleaf pine in 2002 and released with a garlon 4 and JLB oil mixture in December 2004. Notice the mix of pine and oak

(with retained leaves). The bottom photo is a stand (Compartment 6240, stand 1) planted in 2005.

Release treatments will cut undesirable trees within a three (3) foot radius around desirable pine or hardwood trees. Notice the red maple (bare stem) growing next to the shortleaf pine in the foreground. The release treatments will enable pine to maintain free-growing conditions along with other desirable hardwoods. No herbicides will be used with these treatments.
