B. Prior to commencing stone work, the Contractor shall confer with the C.O. and shall erect a small sample wall approximately 4'0" long x 3'0" high for the C.O.'s approval as to color, size, texture, joints, and pattern. This work shall not be a part of the structure, and the final approved sample shall remain in place until the structure is completed and accepted at which time it shall be torn down and removed from site.

C. Schedule deliveries to avoid delays and to greater accumulations than can be suitably stored at site.

2. Fine Aggregate: ASTM C 144, natural, pass 6 mesh screen. Sand for pointing mortar, pass No. 12 sieve.

3. Water: Potable quality

4. Hydrate Lime: ASTM C 207, Type S.

G. Workmanship

1. Placing Stone

When the masonry is to be placed on a prepared foundation bed, the bed shall be firm and normal to, or in steps normal to, the face of the wall before any stone is placed. When it is to be placed on foundation masonry, the bearing surface of this masonry shall be cleaned thoroughly and wetted immediately before the mortar bed is spread.

All masonry shall be constructed by qualified Masons with a minimum of 5 years of experience.

Care shall be taken to prevent the bunching of small stones or stones of the same size. Large stones shall be used for the bottom courses and the number of large selected stones shall decrease in the

Morganton Point Bath House 37 Project Specifications corners. In general, the stones shall decrease in size from the bottom of the top of work.

All stones shall be cleaned thoroughly and wetted immediately before being set, and the bed which is to receive them shall be cleaned and moistened before the mortar is spread. They shall be laid with their longest faces horizontal in full beds of mortar, and the joints shall be flushed with mortar. The exposed faces of individual stones shall be parallel to the faces of the walls in which the stones are set.

At least 80% of the face area of the finished wall shall consist of stones laid on a horizontal bed so that a stable and horizontal appearance results. Stones shall be laid in a full bed of mortar. Care shall be exercised to keep exposed faces free of mortar. The maximum and minimum projections of rock faces beyond the surface plane shall not vary from each other by more than 2 inches.

The stones shall be so handled as not to jar or displace the stones already set. Suitable equipment shall be provided for setting stones larger than those that can be handled by two men. The rolling or turning of stones on the wall will not be permitted. If a stone is loosened after the mortar has taken initial set, it shall be removed, the mortar cleaned off, and the stone re-laid with fresh mortar.

2. Bed and Joints

Bed surfaces of face stone shall be approximately normal to the faces of the stones for about 2 inches and from this point may depart from a normal plane not to exceed 2 inches in 12 inches. Beds for face stone may vary from 1/2 to 2-1/2 inches in thickness. They shall not extend in an unbroken line thru more than five stones. Joints may vary from 1/2 to 2-1/2 inches in thickness. They may be at angles with the vertical from 0 to 45 degrees. Face stone shall bond at least 6 inches longitudinally and 2 inches vertically. At no place shall corners of four stones be adjacent to each other. The stone shall be hammer dressed to remove any thin or weak portions. Face stones shall be dressed to provide bed and joint lines that do not vary more than 1-1/2 inches from true lines and to insure the meeting of bed and joint lines without the rounding of the corners of the stones in excess of 1-1/2 inches in radius.

3. Headers at Corners

Headers shall be distributed uniformly throughout the walls of structures so as to form at least one-fifth of the exposed faces. They shall be of such lengths as to extend from the front face of the wall into the backing at least 12 inches. When a wall is 18 inches in thickness, the headers shall extend entirely thru from front to back face.

4. Pointing

Both bed and vertical joints shall be filled with mortar and struck off with a rounded wooden tool so as to leave a round depression in the mortar from one-half to three fourths of an inch in width and from one-fourth to three-eights of an inch in depth.

5. Coping

Copings, if called for, shall be as shown on the plans. Where copings are not called for, the top of the wall shall be furnished with stones wide enough to cover the top of the wall. Stone shall be laid in such a manner that the top course is an integral part of the wall.

7. Weather Limitations

No placing of stone shall be done in freezing weather except by written permission from the C.O. and then only by the use of such methods as he may prescribe for preparing the materials and protecting the

Morganton Point Bath House 38 Project Specifications work after laying. Such permission and the use of the methods prescribe shall not, however, release the Contractor from his obligation to build a satisfactory structure. All work damaged by cold weather shall be removed and replaced. In hot or dry weather the masonry shall be satisfactorily protected from the sun and shall be kept wet for a period of at least three days after completion.
